Dear Chith Puram Ji

..

I totally agree with you about "likhitha nama japam" and I am not beating my own drums, since I am a living example for that. Our father did that for all us after his retirement one lakh times and offered for pooja near our temple and took it back as prasadam. I tried to follow that during my muscat days while working. I faced with flood and my little Omani (rented) house was flooded. Undaunted, I was writing in that situation surrounded with water, to my surprise a friend of mine (I call him Balettan real name was Balakrishnan) came there and saved me and searched for a better living place within 2 weeks or so back in 1986. I did continue to write during my spare time but could not complete one lakh, though I did not "set" a time limit to complete. I had to leave my job and came to USA. Those papers I brought with me to USA and was lying locked up. Nearly after 10 years, I

resumed it and completed during Mandala Maasam in 1996 and offered it at Ayyappa Sannidi during the Lakshaarchana in Jan. 1997 at Dallas. Our daughter who was married in New York in 1993 was not blessed with a baby until then but they were blessed with a boy in that year(1997) and he was born on Vijayadasami day. I ventured another mission of one lakh during 2004 and this time I wanted to complete one lakh nama japam (Om Namo Narayanaya) with in the Mandala Maasam. With HIS blessings I could complete and this time another blessing was waiting for us as our youngest daughter who got married at Meenakshi temple in 2000 were blessed with a daughter in April 2005. We joined them in 2006 for her 1st birthday in Detroit MI where again I did once more one lakh. Our daughter conceived, and they were blessed with a baby girl in Dec 2006. Our stay there was extended till the rest of the

year to be of help to our daughter and first grand daughter. With this Sath Sangh Group (our own group) In 2006 I got acquainted with our KVG and got Narayaneeyam sets from him and also bought Bhagavath Geetha sets from Chinmaya Mission in Philadelhpia that proved beneficial to me and aroused an urge to learn Sanskrit. Our Sarojaji started a class and I am still learning because of our Group and my involvement with it. I could contribute in our Koti Nama Japam blog that was started by Sunil that even after completion of one Koti it is still continuing. Thus likhitha nama japams had great impact in my life.

Namaste! The story of Ajamila and the last word of Sage Veda Vyasa in Srimad Bhagavatam extol the glory of chanting naamam or the Lord's name. Let us look at the chanting process carefully. The chanting process or naama japam is surprisingly simple. It is clearly stated that chanting the naamam does not impose any condition on the devotee or the actual chanting. There are restrictions on reciting certain mantras, or going to certain temples or performing pujas in temples. But chanting can be done any time of the day or night. Cleanliness is very important for pujas, going to temples and chanting

mantras. The knowledgeable ones say that it can be chanted whether one is clean or not.

sucir vaa asucirvaasarva avasthaasu sarvadaThus you need not wait to brush your teeth or bathe to chant a naamam. Do it now.One can chant any name of choice to glorify the Lord. When we chant we use our tongue and ear and probably mind also in an attempt to focus upon the Lord. Naama japam is considered to be ideally suited for the kaliyuga that we are living in.Another way of

performing naama japam is by writing the naamam. This can probably easily done using a table of rows and columns. By writing same number of columns and rows in every page one can easily keep tab of the count. This method is commonly called likhita (written) japam and definitely requires the use of eyes, hand and mind. It is likely that many would probably use tongue to chant and use our ears to hear the naamam while writing. Thus we can use our mind and four organs to perform likhita japam. This would make us focus more on the Lord and therefore more desirable.Starting today I intend to write at least 12 naamam every day and I urge you to keep me company. With Lord's blessings I am sure you will.Hari Om!Chith Puram

Jneyam - Namam2 - likhitha nama japam

Namaste,

Totally agree with you. Any japam, especially likhita japam is a great idea. We

highly recommend it but before you start, please read the late Shri Eknath

Easwaran's book on Mantram. He was from Kerala, settled in the U.S.

He writes: "If you wait for a stretch of two hours when no one is going to

disturb you; it will never happen.

• Repeat the mantra night and day. We mean, literally night and day. Two

minutes while you are brushing your teeth, two minutes waiting for the

elevator, two minutes walking to your office, five minutes waiting at the

restaurant. It will all add up. The mantra done in this way will keep you

relaxed and alert during the day

• Practice repeating it when you are falling asleep. It will go on

working for you throughout the night as well.

• When you are faced with an overwhelming challenge or simply a difficult

situation repeat the mantra.

• Whenever you feel angry or afraid, nervous or worried or resentful,

repeat the mantra until the agitation subsides. The mantra will work to steady

the mind, harness your emotions and put them to work for you."

with regards,
