Namaste!Probably the most popular the book of Ramayanam that  is the one written by Sage Valmiki with 24,000 verses.  King Dasaratha, desirous of getting a son performed a yagam called Putrakameshti.  The sages made several offerings into the holy fire chanting appropriate mantras.  Toward the end of the sacrifice a person came from the sacrificial fire carrying an urn containing payasam (a sweet dish made of rice.)

The sages present there advised King Dasaratha to distribute the payasam to his wives.  At that timme there were only two  of his three wives were present.  King Dasaratha divided the payasam equally between Kausalya and Kaikeyi.  Both of them wanted to take the payasam and also share it with Sumitra.  Therefore, they split the payasam they received equally and gave one share two Sumitra.  Thus Kausalya had one-fourth of the original payasam and she give the other quarter to Sumitra.  Similarly Kaikeyi had a quarter of the payasam and gave the remaining quarter to Sumitra.  All of them became pregnant and Kausalya gave birth to Rama.  Kaikeyi had  son who was named Bharata.  Sumitra with the power of the two shares of payasam she received had twins Lakshmana and Satrughna.

We will continue this next time.
