Dear all,

In olden days, a Guru always stressed the importance of self discipline and patience in  a disciple. Once a young man approached a Guru and requested him to give Njaanaopadesham or advise on self realization. Guru did not say " yes " or " no " and asked him to come to him after taking bath in the nearby river. He immediately went to the river to clean his exterior body.

Meanwhile Swamiji asked a lady who lives in the ashramam helping him, to go and touch him with the dirty broom when he walked back from the river towards the Guru. This lady was a little hesitant and as an obedient disciple, touched the young man with the dirty broom. This man was extremely angry and almost hit her with his fist. She just ran and with all the anger he approached the Guru. Guru told him to go and take a bath one more time. He went to the river again. When he came back he told him to come back after one year to get the advise and told him to chant divine names of Bhagavaan as many times as possible.

He went and came back after one year and Guru sent him to the river to clean himself. While he was coming from the river, he was showered with all the trash collected by the same lady after sweeping the whole ashramam. This time he scolded her, but did not try to hit her. She ran away as per Guru's advice. Again Guru asked him to come after one more year of Naamasankeerthanam and never gave a chance to ask any questions about his decision.

He went and came back again, went to the river for a bath, and this time while coming back to the ashramam from the river, this same lady appointed by the Guru showered all the messy waste from the kitchen. This time the young man did not get angry, instead thanked her for helping him to gain self- discipline, mind control and patience. Two years of continuous  namasanakeerthanam had changed his mind and taught him to react in a peaceful way to any annoying or irritating situation. Guru saw his response and told him that he was ready then for receiving the Njaanopadesham or divine advice. Guru accepted him as a disciple and guided him in the right direction.

May Bhgavaan bless us to react to all situations peacefully, completely surrendering to His will and following his flawless directions!

Regards and prayers

Savitri
