Freedom means to surrender to the truth. We are thinking that slavery to our mind, our senses, and our ego is freedom and we are thinking that to live a spiritually oriented life is slavery. Just like, when Çréla Prabhupäda, his Godbrother spoke to Lord Zetland, one of the great British nobleman, he really had a deep appreciation for Bhagavad-gétä and for Vaiñëavas, and he asked, “can you make me brähmaëa,” and the person said yes, “we can make you brähmaëa, it is not a matter of birth, it is a matter of one’s quality.” “What do I have to do?”. “Simply follow these four principles: No illicit sex, no intoxication, no gambling, no meat-eating”. And he very honestly looked to this saint and said, “that is impossible, how will I

live.” So, to follow these rules feels like slavery. You are giving up so many nice things in life that give so much enjoyment, but from the perspective of reality, to be addicted to all of these things which simply infatuate and perpetuate the power of the false ego, that is slavery. Milton, he had written the opinion of Satan, that to reign in hell is better than to serve in heaven. That is the modern day philosophy of life in a very blatant and honest form, but if we want real life, actual life, we have to understand the opposite principle.
