Guest guest
Dear all, In skanda puranam there is a story about Thulasi Maahaathmyam. Story goes like this: A brahmin called Dharmadatta lived in Karaveerapura village. He was an ardent devotee of Vishnu Bhagavan and every day during Braahma muhurttha (about one and a half hours before sunset) he bathed and went to the near by temple for darshan. One day he was going to the Vishnu kshethra with a kamandalu full of water and some Thulasi leaves in a small bag to offer to Bhgavan. One demoness or raakshasi attacked him on his way. It was unexpected and he hit her with the bag containing the thulasi leaves. Suddenly the raakshasi turned into a beautiful woman. She told him with folded hands: " Poojya Braahmin! I got paapamoksham from the form of a raakshasi. In my last janma, I always fought with my good natured husband. He put up with me for a long time and finally decided to leave me and marry another woman. Then I committed suicide and was taken to Yamaloka. As a punishment for the unpardonable sins or paapam I did, Yamadeva gave me the body of a demoness who was always hungry, thirsty, restless and ugly looking. " " Poojya swaamiji, please show me the path to attain moksham. You transformed me from demoness to a beautiful woman, now you guide me to moksham and I do not want anything else. " Then the brahmin told her that it was the touch of the Thulasi leaves in the bag that transformed her and saying that he took some more Thulasi leaves, dipped in the water in his kamandalu and sprinkled on her chanting dwaadashaakshari " Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya " ! She became divine and by the time she finished pradakshinam and namaskaaram to the brahmin, Vishnu Paarshadaas or Vishnu Bhagavan's assistants came with a chariot to take her to Vaikundham! Such is the power of Thulasi leaves! (I have also heard that they blessed this Brahmin and told him that Bhagavan would become his son in Thretha yuga and would attain moksham in that janma. This braahmin was then born as Lord Raama's father, King Dasharatha.) Sreekrishnaarpanamasthu regards and prayers Savitri
