Panickarji, a very informative article. It was a real pleasure reading it.

As Sastriji says, never realised that so much was involved in choosing one's

Istadevada. A vast majority of the people are not aware of this fact. We often

switch from one ishtadevada to another

not knowing the importance of sticking to a single one, as Perunthachan pointed

out to Agnihotri.

I used to worship Triprayarappan, Sree Rama, as a young man because my birth

star is the same as that of Sree Rama, Punartham, and so my grandma had told me

to consider Rama as my ishtadevda.

But that changed in early 1960 when I visited the United States as a tourist. I

was walking along Broadway in New York City when I came across a group of

safron-clad swamis singing and dancing to Hare Krishna music. That is the first

time I saw the hare krishna followers. I watched them for a while and moved on.

Some distance away there was another group of these swamis sitting on the

pavement selling Krishna related articles. They started talking to me and

something within me said that I should get a copy of the Bhagavad Gita

and the book on Self Realisation by Srila Prabhupada.

That was the turning point. Since then I have been an ardent devotee of

Guruvayoorappan.

May be because my name is Achuthan.

jai shree krishna !

Respected Sastriji,

Bhakti is eternal.

I am delighted to read the article of brother Panickerji. My family deity is Srikanteswara and my mother used to pray Lord Krishna every moment.

It is very nice of you to say about Lord Krishna and Lord Siva and we are all blessed.

It is clear from Veda and in our daily prayers:

Aum namO bhagavatE vaasudEvaaya,

yaagum sadaa sarva bhuutaani caraaNisthaavaraaNica,

saayam praatarnamastyanti saamaa sandhyaabhi rakshatu.

Sivaaya vishNuruupaaya vishNavE Sivaruupaayaca,

Sivasya hrudayam vishNu rvishNOSca hrudayam Sivaha.

yathaa SivamayO vishNuhu Evam vishNumayaSSivaha,

ya thaantaram napaSyaami tathaa mE swastiraayushi.

namO brahmaNya dEvaaya gObraahmaNa hitaayaaca,

jagaddhitaaya krushNaaya gOvindaaya namOnamaha.

Ishta Devata need not be particular. It is in many ways such as hereditary belief, Guru’s instructions and self determination. In which ever form one prays, Lord Krishna will appear.

The belief is essential.

With pranams,

Dear Panickarji,Thanks for the excellent article. I had no idea that so much was involved in choosing the Ishtadevata. I was born in Ettumanoor and so I always used to pray to Ettumanoorappan. Later on when I studied Narayaniyam I began to pray to Guruvayurappan and also to Ettumanoorappan. I have thus both Siva and Vishnu as my Ishtadevatas. I do not know what would be my Ishtadevata according to my horoscope. This is just by the way. Regards,S.N.Sastri--- On Sat, 12/12/09, Udayabhanu Panickar <udhayabhanupanickar @> wrote:
