Guest guest
Chapter 12: Devotional ServiceVerse: 9atha cittam samadhatum na saknosi mayi sthiram abhyasa-yogena tato mam icchaptum dhananjaya Translation: My dear Arjuna, O winner of wealth, if you cannot fix your mind upon Me without deviation, then follow the regulative principles of bhakti-yoga. In this way develop a desire to attain Me. Explanation:The exclusive focus of the mind on Krishna may be difficult for many. For such persona, Krishna gives the process of sadhana-vaidhi bhakti, or performing devotional service as per the rules and regulations prescribed in the scriptures. While this form of bhakti may lack the spontaneous attraction that a pure devotee constantly experiences for Krishna, it is performed with love and devotion and not mechanically. There is only one way to attain Krishna, the path of pure, unalloyed devotion. All other processes that Krishna mentions are for elevating the aspiring devotee to reach this stage of bhakti. That is why He concludes this verse saying, " In this way develop a desire to attain Me. " Once one develops a desire to attain Krishna, then he quickly progresses to the stage of pure devotion described in 12.8. Krishna calls Arjuna, " Dhananjaya " or winner of wealth, since in the past Arjuna had travelled far to acquire wealth needed by Yudhishthira to perform the Rajasuya sacrifice. He indicates that just as Arjuna fought with so many kings to win wealth, he should now fight with his mind to win the wealth of meditation. The process of this battle is succinctly laid out by Srila Prabhupada as follows: " To practice the regulative principles of bhakti-yoga one should, under the guidance of an expert spiritual master, follow certain principles: one should rise early in the morning, take bath, enter the temple and offer prayers and chant Hare Krishna, then collect flowers to offer to the Deity, cook foodstuffs to offer to the Deity, take prasadam, and so on. There are various rules and regulations which one should follow. And one should constantly hear Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam from pure devotees. This practice can help anyone rise to the level of love of God, and then he is sure of his progress into the spiritual kingdom of God. This practice of bhakti-yoga, under the rules and regulations, with the direction of a spiritual master, will surely bring one to the stage of love of God. Animals are to be loved, not eaten. Eating flesh is good neither for the mind nor for the intellect, not even for the body. It distorts the basic character of human.
