Guest guest
|| Shree Hari || Ram Ram II 2:30 II dehi nityam avadhyo 'yam, dehe sarvasya bhaarata tasmaat sarvaani bhootaani, na tvam sochitum arhasi " O' Bharata (Arjuna), in all bodies, that indweller, can never be slain. Therefore, for all beings, in other words you must not grieve for any being " . Comment: All beings are an eternal ray of Paramatma (Supreme Consciousness) – " mamai'va'msho jivaloke (Gita 15-7), `ishvar ansha jiva abinaashi' (Ramcharit manas Uttar 117-1). Being an eternal ray (ansh) of Supreme Consciousness, its destruction has never happened, will not happen and cannot ever happen. The indestructibility, knowledge and bliss are not Shariri's (indweller's) attributes but are Its very nature (swaroop). The body, simply is an instrument of doing action and enjoying the fruit there of. The body has the relationship with the destructible world because it is an ansha (part) of the world only. Theoretically speaking this philosophy has been expressed in six systems of philosophy. From Gita Prabodhani in Hindi pg. 38-39 by Swami Ramsukhdasji --------------------------- Chapter 2, Verse 30 is as follows; Dehi = Embodied (the Self, the Aatman) Nityam = always AvadhyaH = indestructible Ayam = This (the Self, the Aatman) Dehe = in the body Sarvasya = of all Bhaarat = O Arjuna! Tasmaat = therefore SarvaaNi = for all Bhootaani = beings / creatures Na = not Tvam = you Shochitum = to grieve Arhasi = ought / should English translation:- This Self, the Aatman, the Indweller in the bodies of all beings is ever indestructible, O Arjuna! Therefore, you should not grieve for any creature. " An ordinary man has a terrible dream that his enemy attacks him with a sword. Being frightened beyond his wit, he screams and wakes up from his dream state. He finds himself in the comfort zone of his own house with a dim lamp burning in his bedroom with no trace of the attacker. Still being shaken, his heart continues to palpitate rapidly for some more time. This is the sign of one's identification with one's physical body. " …..Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa. In the wakeful state, one refers to his / her experiences as follows; At the level of physical body, with the help of perceptions by five sensory organs: I smell, I taste, I see, I touch and I hear. At the mental level, on the basis of the perceptions, desires and emotions: I feel good, I feel bad, I am pleased, I am angry, I am happy, I am unhappy, I like, I dislike, I hate, I love etc. At the intellectual level on the basis of the individual `Thought Experiments' : I understand, I do not understand, I know, I do not know, I have mastered an art or a technique, I am honoured, I am rebuked etc. Throughout one's life span, one refers to oneself as `I'. `I' myself undergo various experiences. All the things belonging to me are `Mine'. My world is limited to, `I', `Me' and `Mine'. This the Gross level of every being which is the basic animal instinct. But the purpose of every human life is to transcend this base Gross level and instead of being purely selfish, self-centred person, try to focus on the Self, the Aatman and attain unity with the Self. In our Gross level, we are extremely conscious of how our physical bodies are maintained, how do we look and how others appreciate, approve or disapprove us. Every living being is composed of the Self, the Aatman, the indweller, which is immortal and a physical body which is mortal on this planet Earth. The physical bodies of all living beings decay and eventually they perish but the enlivening principle common to all living beings is indestructible, as it survives all the onslaughts. It exists eternally from the time immemorial. Please refer verse 7 in chapter 7 in Shreemad Bhagawad Geeta, wherein Lord Krishna has declared, " There is nothing superior to Me i.e. the Brahman. O Arjuna! All the living beings in the entire Universe are strung on Me as rows of Gems on a common string of the Aatman, the subset of the superset the Brahman, the source of Infinite Energy. " During one's childhood, he / she says, " I am a child " . During adolescence, " I am a youth " . During old age, " I am a sick and old person " . In all these transitions, the Aatman is like a dispassionate onlooker / observer. The Aatman is ever green, as it does not mutate. Only with respect of such an unchangeable, indestructible and immutable reference point of the Aatman, one can appreciate the change of states from childhood to the adulthood to the decay of physical body due to decay and disease in old age and finally total destruction of physical body in the death. However, the Aatman continues its onward journey by abandoning the dead body and enlivening another body that is being conceived. The concept of `I' pervades all experiences in the waking state, dream state, deep-sleep state and beyond as well. It continues to prevail in all periods of one's life time, that `I' is one's own Self, the Aatman, the absolute Consciousness of the Supreme Reality, the Brahman, that Pure Consciousness. Please refer the verse 23 in chapter 13 in Shreemad Bhagawad Geeta, wherein Lord Krishna has proclaimed, " The Supreme Purusha in this body is thus said to be witness, permitter, supporter, enjoyer, Great Lord, the Supreme Being. " This is very succinctly stated in Vedanta philosophy as `Tat Tvam Asi' i.e. you are the One, the Pure Consciousness. The famous Russian writer Leo Tolstoy has said, " The kingdom of God is within you. " The Kingdom of God or Reign of God is the foundational, fundamental concept in the three Abrahamic religions namely Judaism, Christianity and Islam. According to Jesus Christ, the Kingdom of God is within every person. It is the Kingdom of love, peace and justice, which is based on the righteous tendencies. Lord Krishna argues that the physical body as the container of the content is destroyed, but the content i.e. the Self, the Aatman remains intact. Lord Krishna offers advice to Arjuna, not to grieve while facing the formidable foes and even to kill those unrighteous ones in the process of the royal battle. Thus, in this verse Lord Krishna sets aside the misconception about the Aatman from the materialistic point of view, by proving it to be conclusively refutable and therefore baseless. Thanks & Best Regards, Shrikant Joshi. ---------------------------- OTHER SADHAKS -Shree Hari- Dear Shrikant, I believe we may have the makings of a meaningful dialogue. Reflecting on your statement pasted below: 'The mind needs the rudder of the intellect, without which it goes helter skelter. The intellect does not get focussed on gross level. It needs the subtlest of the subtle entity the Aatman to focus. Under the presence, supervision and the guidance of the Aatman, the trio of the....' I will paste in a version of Bhagavad Gita CH. 10. 9 - Macchittaa madgatapraanaa bodhayantah parasparam; Kathayantashcha maam nityam tushyanti cha ramanti cha. (ramanti seems to have various translations) CH :9 With their minds and lives entirely absorbed in me, enlightening each other and always speaking of me, they are satisfied and delighted. You notice Shri Krishna talks of the 'mind' being absorbed in the 'Divine Beloved', plus of course lives and talk, a sort of positive feedback, round and round, to one assumes a sort of divine tipping point,(avalanche affect), is reached. Is intellect involved? I am not sure, but never the less juxtaposed to this, see the paste from the book 'The Cosmic Game',(Lila?)by Dr, Stanislav Grof,[..I have not yet met a single individual who has had a deep experience of the transcendental realms and continue to to the world view of western materialistic science. This development is quite independent of the level of intelligence, type and degree of education, and the professional credentials of the individuals involved...] Is there not a danger of rationalizing profundity, with science? Dear Sadhaks this is to me, a wonderful opportunity of divine dialogue.
