II 2:28 II

avyaktaadini bhutaani, vyakta-madhyaani bhaarata

avyakta-nidhaanani eva, tatra kaa paridevana

" Beings are unmanifest in their beginning, manifest in the middle

and unmanifest again in their end, O Bharata (Arjuna), what is there

in this for lamentation? "

Comment:

The Self is indestructible and the body is destructible. From the

gross viewpoint if we visualize the bodies, before birth they were

not with us and after death they will not be there. In the present,

it seems that they are with us but in fact they are moving away from

us every moment. What is the gain in lamenting over the temporary

union and separation of these bodies.

From Gita Prabodhani in Hindi pg. 35 by Swami Ramsukhdasji

---------------------------

Chapter 2, Verse 28 is as follows;

Avyakta = unmanifested

Aadeeni = in the beginning

Bhootani = living beings

Vyakta = manifested

Madhyaani = in their middle state

Bhaarata = O Arjuna!

Avyakta = unmanifested

Nidhanani = after the death

Eva = also

Tatra = there

Kaa = what

Paridevanaa = grief

English translation:-

O Arjuna, all living beings are unmanifest in their original state,

manifest in their middle / transient state and return to unmanifest

steady state after the death. What is there to grieve about?

The waves in an ocean arise from the water in the ocean, they

sustain for a finite time of period and then they vanish in the same

water.

In physics, a surface wave is a mechanical wave that propagates

along the interface between differing media, usually two fluids with

different densities. In fluid dynamics, gravity waves are waves

generated in a fluid medium or at the interface between two media

e.g. the earth's atmosphere and water in an ocean, which has the

restoring force of gravity or buoyancy. Ocean surface waves are

mechanical waves that propagate along the interface between water

and air; the restoring force is provided by the earth's gravity, and

so they are often referred to as surface gravity waves. As the wind

blows, pressure and friction forces perturb the equilibrium of the

ocean surface. These forces transfer wind energy from the

atmospheric air to the water, forming waves. As soon as the state of

equilibrium is restored, the waves vanish.

In the same manner, human beings are born out of the Brahman on this

mortal Earth, they enjoy their individual lives full of opposites of

hot and cold experiences to their physical bodies, joys and sorrows

to their minds and honours and dishonours to their intellects. After

a finite period of time of their individual life spans, they succumb

to death.

The material world of objects follows the law of causation. The

world of " effects " have origins from the world of " causes " ; while

the effects are manifest and the causes are unmanifest. The current

manifest world was unmanifest before its creation, for the time

being it is available for human cognition as fully manifest and

sooner or later it will fade away to become unmanifest. It amounts

to the interpretation that the present came from the " Unknown " and

shall eventually return to the " Unknown " . Even under this

interpretation, why one should mourn as the eternal wheel of life

cycle will rotate forever in such a way that what seems to come

down, will rise soon and vice versa.

The Self is very difficult to realise to all mortals on the planet

Earth. Lord Krishna seems to pardon Arjuna for his inability in

fully appreciating and grasping the Eternal Cycle of life and

advices Arjuna that the least he can do is not to grieve over it.

It remains to be seen if the questions regarding the origin of life

on earth and the origin of life in the universe have the same

answer.

Thanks & Best Regards,

Shrikant Joshi.
