II 2:36 II

avaachya-vaadaans cha bahoon, vadishyanti tavaahitaah

nindantas tava samarthyaam, tato duhkhataram nu kim

" Your enemies, disparaging your strength will speak many unbecoming words. What

could be more distressing than that? "

From Gita Prabodhani in Hindi pg. 42 by Swami Ramsukhdasji

---------------------------

Chapter 2, Verse 36 is as follows;

Avaachya = improper to be spoken

Vaadaan = words

Cha = and

Bahoon = many

VadiShyanti = will say

Tava = your

AhitaaH = enemies

NindantaH = cavilling

Tava = your

Saamarthyam = prowess / strength

TataH = than this

DuHkhataram = more painful / more distressful

Nu = indeed

Kim = what

English translation:-

Your enemies will also slander your strength and speak many unseemly words. What

could be more painful than that?

Lord Krishna continues to explain the adverse consequences of abandoning the

battlefield to Arjuna.

An innocent child while running makes a misjudgment about his abilities and

falls on the ground. He wishes that nobody watches his fall. However, if someone

watches him and laughs at him then it is considered to be an insult and the

child starts crying. Psychologically all of us do not like to be humiliated

under any circumstances and especially by our near and dear ones, let alone by

our opponents.

The very thought of waging a war against Arjuna used to create a shudder in the

hearts of his opponents. Arjuna's mere presence in a war used to dampen the

fighting spirits of his enemies. In the backdrop of such an exemplary track

record of Arjuna, his current palpable state of utter shambles is bound to

attract derision by one and all.

A man of exceptional courage and strength like Arjuna cannot dream of being

insulted, on account of slandering of his valour by his sworn enemies like

Duryodhana, Dushshaasana, Shakukini and KarNa and the resultant perpetual

ignominy.

While pointing out the folly of running away from the battlefield, Lord Krishna

cautions Arjuna that his enemies will label him to be an effeminate person

wearing bangles. While reminding him for the last time about the role of

`Bruhannada' that Arjuna had played in the 13th year of exile, Lord Krishna

warns that his enemies will even call him to be a sterile, weak, impotent and

many more such unbecoming words. Under such circumstances, what can be more

distressful than that?

Lord Krishna brings to Arjuna's notice that such a life will be indeed

intolerable to him when his sworn enemies will scandalize his glorious name and

chivalry in foulest of the foul languages. Then the rest of Arjuna's life will

be like a curse of living in the hell. Being a true warrior, that is certainly

not what Arjuna will opt and settle for in his life as a `fait accompli'.

Lord Krishna advices the grief-stricken Arjuna that 'enough is enough' and now

he ought to rise to the supreme call of his obligatory duties and must perform

his divine role of establishing superiority of righteousness over

unrighteousness.

-Shree Hari-

Dear Shrikant,

Interesting concept - Gita 2:35, the 'Divine' using human weakness to facilitate

a righteous outcome.

Such a concept, triggers thoughtful contemplation when it is projected into

society at large.
