I am to do Tharpanams for Ammavasya/Masapirappu for next 6 months here. Can someone guide me as to how to spell Sankalpam like " JAMBUDHWEEPE BHARATA VARSHE - BHARATHA KANDE - MEROHO - DAKSHINE PARSHWE " Perhaps members residing in USA and regularly doing the tharpanams under the guidance of some vadyars here can be of use in this matter. Whatever you do, please ensure that the daily Sandhyavandanam is done without fail. This writer hopes that one need not stress the Sandhya aspect as you must be presumably doing this routinely. However, just in case. Please do not misunderstand or feel otherwise. The point is many, especially when abroad with busy tight schedules and other commitments, tend to give less importance to Sandhya. They participate in various satsangas, slokas, temple visits, prayer meetings, rituals etc. but cut-short the Sandhya. This is totally unacceptable. Especially, if one is engaged in tarpanam, Sandhya preliminary assumes all the more criticality. NOTHING MOVES WITHOUT THE SANDHYA. IF SANDHYA IS DONE, NOTHING ELSE NEEDS TO BE DONE SANDHYA IS MANDATORY FOR TARPANAM AND TARPANAM IS MANDATORY FOR ITS OWN SAKE. 2. Regarding uttering the various sankalpam words eg. Bharatvarsha etc. You need to be very much conscious of yourself. You have to actively, not passively, actively, remember and bring to your inner mind your own home back in India. Or you can bring to mind a temple, in case you have visited one here. The idea is Sankalpam means 'inner resolve' and in cases like yours where you are in foreign lands, it assumes additional importance because it is all the more reason that the same cannot be uttered mechanically, which is permitted at least if you are in your own home here. Esoterically spreaking of course you can construe the whole universe as Bharatavarsham. This is the highest ideal of the Vedas and is the most apporpriate feeling during sankalpam. You must believe what the writer is saying because these are subtle yet powerful mental capabilities and catalysts that they go a long way in ensuring that the deed which you are about to undertake (eg. tarpanam, or homam etc) goes through smoothly both externally and inwardly Bottomline : Giving to the spirits something beyond your normal senses will get you unasked for blessings from all. All that is needed is a little extra effort in putting our heart and soul into the act.
