Guest guest
Respected Sir : Your membership to these various fora is indeed like a whiff of fresh breeze. Indeed your connection to the print media is a boon to all of us for sure. Needless to say most of the stalwart members of these various fora are experts in their respective fields. Each is a Gem unto himself/herself. The writer has learnt a lot from the postings of these scholars. While on the subject, based on a fervent hope that the members would not mind the presumptuous spirit, this writer would like to take the liberty of expressing his deep desire to accord a small column or space or feature in your site/magazine for highlighting the importance of Sandhyavandanam and Gayathri Japam. Indeed your very first introductory mail itself talks of Gayathri Homam, which itself has given a sort of intuitive courage to this writer to once more highlight this topic. Without any conscious intention to hurt or injure anybody's sentiments, one would like to note that it is a well known public fact that many of us who wear the sacred thread either : a. are not doing the Sandhyavandanam at all or b. doing it in a highly casual manner with irregularity In either case, there seems to be lack of seriousness on the subject. While it is good to talk about religion, philosophies, engage in socio-religious discourses and pray etc. neglect of something basic is what is of disturbing concern to this writer. In the writer's perception, constant reference in any media would surely the same effect and impact similar to the sponsorship/advertisement effect during major global sporting events like World Cup Football, or World Cup Cricket. One has to constantly keep the topic in the eye and mind of the reader. Over a period of say 5 years, readers would get so much used to the reference that it will acquire forceful validity. This writer knows for a fact that lot of women read these spiritual magazines. Most of them are mothers who are the best position to push their wards to do the Sandhya. Compared to a male-father figure - where sternness and authority is obvious - a subtler and comparatively gentler persuasion can be achieved by Mothers. If the young can be somehow made to do the Sandhya they will carry the torch wherever they go, be it hostel life in IIT at Calcutta, or a campus in the US or as an Executive in Sydney. If you permit, would like to recommend that every page at the bottom carry the banner in a single line in English, Tamil, Sanskrit " Please do the Sandhya regularly " . Thats all. A terse message. or a more forceful rhetoric : " Has your son done the Sandhya today? " . The mother will read it on day 1, remember and chide the son, if the Sandhya is not done, then the next day, during casual idle thumbing of the pages during her afternoon siesta she would come across the same message again, and recollect " Oh, today I must tell my boy when he returns from School " . If she is working and is returning home a chooses to read the magazine in the train/bus just to relieve tension or boredom, the message will stare boldly. First on reaching home she will try to tell her son to do the Sandhya. Unlike men, who read novels, or economic and business papers, at least in India, and more particularly in Bombay itself, the writer has seen many women/mothers choose to stick to some sort of spiritual material - either a bhakti song, prayer book or magazine. These are small, seemingly insignificant moments the mind can be caught.!! There is a small tendency that some people might be bored or may not like this frequent references. This is a small price/risk the magazine may have to pay perhaps, though it is doubtful if this will happen. Trust you would take this in the spirit in which it is written and not otherwise.
