MahamahOpadhyaya, Veda Vedanga paarangatha, Desika Darsana Durandhara Vidvanmani, Sampradaya Rakshaka, late Ubhaya Vedanta Krishna Thathayarya Maha Desikan popularly known as Shri Tirupputkuzhi Swamy was a direct disciple of His Holiness Sri Periyandavan Srinivasa Maha Desikan of Srirangam who had the rare distinction of completing sixty Chaturmasyams and who was known for Gnana, Anushtana and Vairaghya. By virtue of his outstanding and erudite scholarship Shri Tirupputkuzhi Swamy proved to be the most precious disciple of Srirangam Srimad Andavan Ashramam in the 19th century. Shri Tirupputkuzhi Swamy revolutionized the rituals and customs of Sri Swami Desikan Sannidi in Thuppul at Kanchipuram and but for his epoch making contribution, the Mangalasasanam of Sri Swamy Desikan at Varadaraja Swamy temple Purattasi Tiruvonam day (the Tirunakshatram day of Sri Swamy Desikan) which is a pride festival of Kanchipuram every year, would not have been possible. His several masterly works on Sri Visishtadvaita philosophy, on Mimamsa and Tarka Sastras and commentaries of Sri Swamy Desika’s works have enriched the importance and context of these Sastras and they have proved to be monumental works that will be useful for generations to come. The entire Srivaishnava community is, therefore, deeply beholden to this great Acharya forever. The 181st Thirunakshatram of this great Acharya comes on 16th November 2003. The great grand disciples and other admirers of this Acharya are planning to celebrate this event in a fitting manner. A Celebration committee has been set up and an appeal has been printed for this purpose. It is the sacred duty of every Sri Vaishnava to come forward and contribute liberally for this celebration and make it a grand success. We pray the Divine couple of Srirangam and all Purvacharyas especially Srimad Periyandavan for the grand success of the celebration which will certainly provide an impetus for further propagation of our Sampradaya. Narayana Smriti Narayana, Narayana (Sd) His Holiness Sri Paravakkottai Srimath Andavan Yathi Sreshta) Poundarikapuram Swamy Ashramam 43 –A/13 Ashramam Road, Srirangam, 620 006 (Phone: 2436 100) ===================================================== COPY OF THE OFFICIAL APPEAL FROM THE CELEBRATION COMMITTEE --\ ------- A SINCERE APPEAL TO ALL ASTHIKAS Right from the days of Sri Bhagavad Ramanuja in the 11th and 12th Century AD and Sri Thuppul Nigamantha Maha Desika in 13th and 14th Century AD, hundreds of outstanding scholars upholding the traditions of Sri VisishTadvaita philosophy and Sri Vaishnava Sampradaya have appeared in this world and done yeoman service for the consolidation, further stabilization and propagation of our philosophy and religion through their monumental works and teachings. The VisishTadvaita philosophy is as old as Sriman Narayana Himself and His Consort, Mahalakshmi and Vedas. This philosophy gives correct interpretations to Vedas and Upanishads as propounded by Sri Ramanuja and Sri Vedanta Desika in their works. The basic tenet is Sarira and Atma bhava (Body and Soul theory) as enshrined in the Antharyami Brahmanam of Sri Brihadaranyaka Upanishad according to which the Supreme being (Paramatma) and Individual Soul (Jivatma) are two distinct entities but at the same time they are inseparable. Paramatma, being the soul and Jivatma, being His body. The divine couple Lord Sriman Narayana and His consort, Mahalakshmi who are always together is the Supreme entity that is PARATATVAM, Saranagathi or Prapatti done at their lotus feet is the supreme means which is called PARAMA HITAM and eternal service to be done to them after reaching their supreme abode, Sri Vaikuntam is the supreme goal or PARAMA PURUSHARTHAM. In the context of the above, one giant and great scholar, Maha mahO padhyaya Sri KrishNa Thathayarya Maha Desikan appeared 180 years ago. He was popularly and reverentially known as Tirupputkuzhi Swamy, whose remarkable contribution to Sri Swami Desika Sampradaya is something without a parallel. He belonged to Thathacharya family of Satamarshana gotram and was “Mudal Theerthaskarar” at Sri Devaraja Swamy temple in Kanchipuram. Some of his masterly works are - 1. Commentary of Nyaya Parisuddhi of Sri Vedanta Desika 2. A very scholarly and elaborate commentary on Sri Nyaya Siddhanjana of Sri Vedanta Desika. 3. He has authored several works on Nyaya Sastra, Vedanta, Mimamsa, Sangeeta Saastra and Ahnika. He was a disciple of Late His Holiness Srimad Periyandavan of Srirangam and was admired by late His Holiness Sri Ketahnadipatti Swamy, who both were giant Srivaishnavite Acharyas of the 19th Century. The above great Acharya took lot of pains to improve Sri Vedanta Desika’s shrine at Thooppul in Kanchipuram. The entire procedure of Mangalasasanam by Sri Vedanta Desika of Lord Devaraja Swamy on Purattasi Tiruvonam day (Tirunakshatram of Sri Vedanta Desika) and the other connected rituals was visualized and arranged by this Acharya and this is being followed even today. Late Sri U.Ve Vidwan Sri Nrisimha Thathayarya Maha Desikan, the Founder-Editor of “Sri Kanchi Perarulalan”, a monthly religious journal with very informative articles on our philosophy and Sampradayam, was the great grand disciple of the above great Acharya and belonged to his lineage (Thiruvamsam). In fact, in memory of this great Acharya only the above founder editor started the above monthly journal that is paying rich tributes to the above renowned Acharya through this journal every month by publishing his photo and expressing words about the greatness of this Acharya. Putting in a nutshell, this journal is dedicated to this Acharya only. As everybody knows, this journal is published through “Hayagriva Vidya Peetam, Taramani, Chennai – 600 113” and it is in the fitness of things that this great event of 181st Tirunakshatram celebration of this revered Acharya should be celebrated through this Hayagriva Vidya Peetam. Incidentally, this year happens to be the bi-centennial year of Sri Kanchi Perarulalan after completing 20 years of useful service in the spiritual world. So, it is proposed to celebrate this landmark event along with the above celebration. So, the entire celebration has assumed very great significance calling for co-operation of every Srivaishnava. It is appropriate that every Srivaishnava should remember this great Acharya on the occasion of his 181st birthday falling on Sunday, the 16th November 2003 (Aippasi- Ayilyam). The Celebration of this great event is proposed for three days from 14th November 2003 at Hayagriva Vidya Peetam, Tiruvalluvar Street, Taranmani, Chennai and the office of “Sri Kanchi Perarulalan”. The Celebrations include the following: 1. Veda Parayanam 2. Recitation of 4000 Divya Prabandham of Azhwars and Sri Desika Prabandham 3. Grantha Chatushtaya Parayanam 4. Sri Baashya Vidwat Sadas 5.
