Dear Bhaghavathas,

Soon after assuming ThuriAsramam in 1989, HH decided that in these times it is essential to impart career based education to backward students - economically or otherwise - from rural & semi urban areas. After a lot of planning, Srimad Andavan Arts & Science College was established in Srirangam in 1996 with 70 students. This was inaugurated by the then President Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma, a sishya having performed Saranagathi under H.H.Srimad Andavan.

Srirangam is one of the oldest towns in our civilisation but in this major municipality, this was the only Arts & Science College when it was established in 1996. This continues to be so even today!! Admissions are open to all meritorious students without any sectarian consideration of caste and creed.

This is a major achievement with 200,000 Sq.Ft of infrastructure towards classrooms, laboratory, library, staff rooms, hostel rooms etc., with an outlay of over Rs. 12.00 Crores till date. The college is affiliated to the Bharathidasan University. During the Academic Year 2006-07, there were 1760+ students, 99 members of Faculty and 40 administrative staff.

There are 13 Post Graduate Courses including MCA, 9 Under Graduate Courses all in Bio Sciences, Management Sciences and IT & over 20 Diploma & Certificate courses. Under the order of HH Srimad Andavan, this college is being developed as an Institution of Excellence with a strategic target to become a " Deemed to be University " under the UGC Act & Rules by 2014/15.

As a first step towards this strategic goal, the College applied for NAAC {National Assessment & Accreditation Council} rating. NAAC is an Autonomous Body under the UGC – the University Grants Commission and rates all Colleges in India on the basis of compliance with several parameters on the Infrastructure, Teaching, Organisation & Administration, Students performance, Strategic Focus, Research Activities etc.,

A Peer Team deputed by NAAC, inspected the College on 22 & 23-03-2007. Based on their report, NAAC Bangalore has accredited our college with a prestigious " A " Grade (85% -90%) at the National Level.

The NAAC Peer Team made the following observations:

Quote – The Programme options available in the college are unique and the learning environment is conducive for academic achievement.

The marginalized downtrodden rural students are given greater access to higher education as a policy by the college. This is well reflected in the student composition. More than 70% of the students belong to backward and, schedule caste, first generation learners groups from the rural areas.

There is a transparent procedure in admission and fee structure and financial aid and other student support services. The slow learners are identified at the time of admission itself and systematic efforts are being made by monitoring the progress till the end of the course.

One Unique programme which is ICT enabled in BPO is offered and this programme is well accepted by the academic community, students and business community.

The dynamic and interactive learning in the classroom and beyond classroom is unique in terms of catering to the diverse needs and delivery of learning materials.

The learning environment has several healthy trends, which is evident from the teaching quality and the learning process.

There is a strong focus on research integrating a global perspective in an area of specialization (Herbal studies by promoting traditional knowledge, economic and community development through integration of entrepreneurial sprit and productive partnership. This is a unique contribution of the College, which is commendable. The major research project funded by DBT is the commendable programme of the college.

The extension activity is quite impressive and the college faculty has adopted a village for community services and extension activities related to herbal studies, social development, women empowerment etc., the impact of the project is noticeable and commendable.

There is a transparent and positive quality coupled with high amount of involvement seen in the organization and management

As such goal orientation has to be appreciated as a model for similar institutions.

The institution is quite concerned and sensitive to the changing needs of the higher education and job market. Special efforts are given in skill development and value based education. The herbal research centre and its activities, the adoption of one single village with the objective of enhancement of the total quality of life of the villagers and the activities drawn in collaboration with distance learning programme the MOU and linkage with several industries are special features to be appreciated in the college. ICT enabled learning programmes and language lab are note worthy features. The college has organized several national workshops and seminars and soft skill development and promotion of Sanskrit and ancient knowledge are commendable academic activities. The external and internal quality monitoring cell and several innovative diploma and certificate programmes and the strong practical orientation is to be specially appreciated. Several committees to monitor the academic and co-curricular activities and social responsibilities are another feature.

The college has been recognised by Bharathidasan University as the Best Self Financing College in cultural activities under the University in the year 2006. – Unquote

This is indeed an excellent achievement for a College that has just completed 10 years of existence. Adiyen would place on record our deepest appreciation for the phenomenal efforts of the Hon Secretary VS Narasimhan, Principal Dr K Prema, the Faculty Members and the Students who have, as a giant Team, made this rare feat possible.

This is just the first step in our journey to upgrade our College into " Srimad Andavan Deemed University " . We realise that this is a journey of a thousand miles but are confident that, with the Grace of the Padukas, the heavenly guidance of HH Srimad Andavan and the support of well wishers like your self, we shall achieve this milestone well before the target date of 2014/15 being the Sathabhishekam Year of HH.

Other reports and appeals would follow in due course!

In the service of HH,

Daasan RR - Chairman.

PS This will also appear in the May issue of Sri Ranganatha Paduka - our Asramam's official journal for the benefit of thousands of our readers.
