After reading on the internet I understand one should have even numbers not odd numbers of saligramas at home. I am not in a postion to get the 6th salaigrama right away. what should I do? Guest guest
Swamin, I am not an expert in this matter, but I can share with you my experience in terms of having Saligrama moorthy's at home. I had 2 moorthy's for a long time (in fact I inherited from my forefathers). About 6 - 7 years ago, one of the moorthy's was stolen from my house leaving me in great mental distress. I then asked our prakrutham Azhagiyasingar who advised me that one should have only odd number saligramas at home and not even numbers and He said not to worry about the stolen one but to do regular ArAdhanA for the other moorthy I had. This is what I have been doing since then. He also said that if someone had even no of Saligrama's, they they should at least be kept in separate pettis and not in the same petti. This is my humble experience. I would also like to know more about this from learned people. Guest guest
Swamin, I too endorse Sriman Desikan's views. As I have heard and read from " kurai onrum illai " book of Late Sri Mukkur Lakshminarasimhachariar, even numbers of saligraama must not be kept at home (especially 2 or 4). Odd numbers are definitely recommended. I am not sure if higher even numbers such as 6,8... are good. It would be nice if other learned persons advise us the right path. Like Sriman Ramesesh I too have 5 saligraamas at home. Guest guest
Swamin, I really appreciate the inputs with references. Recently I got one saligrama at Badrinath which is not in round in shape but I would say flat with a thickness of 1. to 1.25 inches (approx) and relatively in a very slight oval shape. As I look inside of this it has wide opening, inside two big chakras facing each other. I was told it is sudarshana. Any idea what kind of perumal this saligramam could be? Guest guest
Swamin It is preferable to get this clarified from some learned persons. Generally our griha brihaspathis know how to identify the perumal in the saligraamam. Ideal would be to ask our prakrutham Andavan Swamigal himself. Guest guest
Dear Bhagavatas, Dasan Srikanth's namaskarams. I should have replied earlier, but could not find time. Please pardon me for any apacharams committed. Regarding posession of salagramas, HAVING ODD NUMBER OF SALAGRAMAMS is PROHIBITED. However there is one exception. We can have ONE!!!! ( 3, 5 ,7 etc are PROHIBITED). Among EVEN NUMBERS, WE CANNOT HAVE TWO SALAGRAMAMS. We can have 4, 6, 8 etc but NOT TWO. If we have two, we have to perform aradhanam for both salagramams separately. In other words, we can have 1, 4, 6, 8 , 10 , 12 etc....( but not 2, 3,5,7 etc) Please refer to magnificent articles on this by Sri Sadagopan mama in the bhakti lists. You can also refer to: http://www.salagram.net/sstp-howmany2hav.html I once again apoligise if I have hurt any bhagavatas unintentionally.
