I have 5 saligramas at home. After reading on the internet I understand

one should have even numbers not odd numbers of saligramas at home. I

am not in a postion to get the 6th salaigrama right away. what should I

do? Please guide me to overcome this.

Swamin,

I am not an expert in this matter, but I can share with you my experience in terms of having Saligrama moorthy's at home. I had 2 moorthy's for a long time (in fact I inherited from my forefathers). About 6 - 7 years ago, one of the moorthy's was stolen from my house leaving me in great mental distress. I then asked our prakrutham Azhagiyasingar who advised me that one should have only odd number saligramas at home and not even numbers and He said not to worry about the stolen one but to do regular ArAdhanA for the other moorthy I had. This is what I have been doing since then. He also said that if someone had even no of Saligrama's, they they should at least be kept in separate pettis and not in the same petti.

This is my humble experience. I would also like to know more about this from learned people.

Swamin,

I too endorse Sriman Desikan's views.

As I have heard and read from " kurai onrum illai " book

of Late Sri Mukkur Lakshminarasimhachariar,

even numbers of saligraama must not be kept

at home (especially 2 or 4).

Odd numbers are definitely recommended.

I am not sure if higher even numbers such as 6,8...

are good.

It would be nice if other learned persons advise

us the right path.

Like Sriman Ramesesh I too have 5 saligraamas at

home.

Swamin, I really appreciate the inputs with references. Recently I got one saligrama at Badrinath which is not in round in shape but I would say flat with a thickness of 1. to 1.25 inches (approx) and relatively in a very slight oval shape. As I look inside of this it has wide opening, inside two big chakras facing each other. I was told it is sudarshana. Any idea what kind of perumal this saligramam could be? It is preferable to get this clarified from some learned persons. Generally our griha brihaspathis know how to identify the perumal in the saligraamam. Ideal would be to ask our prakrutham Andavan Swamigal himself.

Swamin,

It is very correct that the identification of

saligrama sila murthy is to be ascertained from

learned people.

When oppurtunities come, the murthys cd be shown to

our Acharyas. HE identifies and blesses us explaining

the significance of the particular saligrama murthy.

For general knowing about saligrama sila murthys a

number of web sites are avilable, and a message posted

on this subject matter sometime back, is brought out

below for general information :

" A beautiful article by www.shaligram.com "

Visit www.shaligram.com for extremely Rare and

Auspicious Shaligrama Shilas

LORD SHALIGRAMA SHILAS THE DIVINE GIFT

Worship Shree Shaligram for six values of life

Righteous living, Wealth, Protection, good health,

pleasures and piritual

AKYAS CA IVA DESE CA SALAGRAMA STHALAM MAHAT

SANAM TAD BHAVAM YAT TAT SALAGRAMAM ITI SMRTAM

Shaligrams are found in Mukti chhetra and Damodar

Kunda (north-west of Nepal). The shaligram is the most

sacred stone worshipped by vaishnavas to worship

Vishnu in an abstract form (i.e., God without

form) as a Shaligram. The marks made by an insect

called " Vajrakitta " gives the Shaligrama a special

significance, with the pattern often representing that

of Sudarshan Chakra (the Discus of Lord Vishnu).

Shaligrams come in different colours but the black,

yellow and blue varities are considered most sacred.

Shaligrams of different shapes are often associated

with the different incarnations of Lord Vishnu

(such as Narasimha, Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Vamana

Avataras and so on).

This webpage is for the devotees aspiring to obtain

the rare Shaligram Shilas. We have been inspired by

the devotees of Hare Krishna and others all over the

world to pass on these auspicious Shaligrams to the

devotees so that these Shilas can find the place

at their puja altar. We have a large collection of

rare Shaligrams which we have collected over many

years. After a deep study we have gained immense

knowledge and experience to name the Shaligram and

recommend them to the devotees according to the

ancient scriptures so that devotees can benefit out of

it. We have around 5000 Shilas of different types. As

per Skanda Purana there can never be a price put

on any Shaligram as there is not enough gold, jewels

or any precious thing exist in the world to equal

even a single Shaligram. We accept a small donation to

cover the cost of the wages, lodging, boarding

and potter / transportation charges paid to the poor

villagers who collect and bring them to us. These

villagers risk their life in search of rare Shaligrams

under very difficult and trying climatic conditions

that exist in and around Kali Gandaki river at

Muktinath (Himalayas Nepal) to bring these auspicious

Shaligrams to all of us.

As per Skanda Purana, Padma Purana and other epics,

the worshipper of Shree Shaligram knows no fear and is

blessed to attain all desirable things, worldly

comforts, good wife, good sons, good health, immense

wealth, peaceful environment prevails in his

surroundings and he gets immense protection against

all evil forces. His all anxieties, mental tension

goes off and all ambitions are fulfilled Even the

water that has just touched the Shaligram Shila

becomes " Amrit " and by drinking it " man " is relived

of all diseases. Worshipping of Shaligram helps in

meditation and attainment of spiritual liberation.

The devotees are hereby cautioned that spurious, fake,

artificially carved black stones are very much

Dear Bhagavatas, Dasan Srikanth's namaskarams. I should have replied earlier, but could not find time. Please pardon me for any apacharams committed. Regarding posession of salagramas, HAVING ODD NUMBER OF SALAGRAMAMS is PROHIBITED. However there is one exception. We can have ONE!!!! ( 3, 5 ,7 etc are PROHIBITED). Among EVEN NUMBERS, WE CANNOT HAVE TWO SALAGRAMAMS. We can have 4, 6, 8 etc but NOT TWO. If we have two, we have to perform aradhanam for both salagramams separately. In other words, we can have 1, 4, 6, 8 , 10 , 12 etc....( but not 2, 3,5,7 etc) Please refer to magnificent articles on this by Sri Sadagopan mama in the bhakti lists. You can also refer to: http://www.salagram.net/sstp-howmany2hav.html I once again apoligise if I have hurt any bhagavatas unintentionally.
