Dear Sir,

Four months from Ashada Shukla Ekadashi (Ekadashi during the bright half of Ashada-shayanaikadashi) to Karthika shukla Dwadashi (dwadashi during the bright half of Kartika-Utthana-Prabodha Dwadashi) is known as Chathurmasa. During this period, Mahavishnu remains in yoganidra. The period of chaturmasyam is very dear to Sriman Narayana. Though now a day’s only sanyasis observe chaturmasyam strictly, it is to be observed by all people belonging to all varnashramams (brahmachari, gruhasta, vanaprasta and sanyasashrama). Tapas, visiting holy places, homam, snanam in punya kshetrams and dhanam is very important during these four months and gives immesurable

merit. This vratham if followed properly bestows great merit and destroys all sins. Sridhara, Hrishikesha, Padmanabha and Damodhara are the presiding forms of the lord for the four months respectively.

Chaturmasya sankalpam is to restrain from not eating few things in each month. In first month of ashada, shaka vratham is done. In Sharvana month dadhi vratham is done. In Bhadrapada masam, people restrain from taking ksheeram and dwidala vratham is performed in ashlesha month. Giving up desired things for Sriman Narayana in his thoughts and prayers is very meritorious. When we do not concentrate on our food, and concentrate on lord with Bhakthi he gets pleased. This vratham is observed for purity of heart and avoiding any kind of ahimsa.

Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya ||

Jai Shree Krishna.
