Solar Eclipse

Dear all,

This solar eclipse on December 14 will be visible from most

of US ( except New England).

The timings for the folks on East Coast will be as follows :

Washington DC metro area - From 4 : 13 PM to 4:44 PM.

New York City and suburbs - From 4:13 to 4:27 PM.

Dear Haribhaktas,

According to the local CALIFORNIA panchanga (Shri Trivedi's)

the eclipse starts at 10.03 AM in the morning. The full effect is at 12.45PM

and ends around 15.15PM. I am not sure which parts of US the eclipse is

visible. It is not seen in India. I think we can finish pooja early in

the morning around 7.00AM. People who have to give pithru tharpana have

to fast until the eclipse is over. Please advice, if this is correct.

I will confirm the timings later, after speaking to the temple priests here.

If any of you have details please post it on this list.

Dear Sir,

Solar eclipse is very good time for sadhana and tapas. In fact, everyone should be praying during the eclipse time. Even Lord Rama and Krishna performed yagnams and danams during solar eclipse. Mythological references to eclipse are found in Maha Bhagavatha, Maha Bharatha, and other Vishnu related puranams. It is time for purification and removing ill effects

1) Solar eclipse on this 22nd which is going to be longest total solar eclipse would last over 6 1/2 minutes. Total contact time will be almost 3 hours, from approximately 0h30minutes to 3h00m Universal Time (times are approximate and vary according to expert; some have contact starting as late as 0h55m and ending after 4h00m UT). Before beginning and once the solar eclipse is over one should take headbath (note: One should not take oil headbath, it is just with water).

2) As per the sastras it is vargitham to have food or water before from 12 hrs (around four praharas(1/8th of the day) before solar eclipse) before start of grahanam and during grahanam. We need to keep darbha grass in every eatables stored in the house. Since during grahanam food gets poisoned, darbha prevents from that. It has strength of cutting tongues of those who come to poison it. Even darbha is kept on sides of toranam of house and prayer room from evil entering the house.

3) This grahanam will affect those who are born under Punarvasum Pushya, Aslesha, Anuradha and Uthara Bhadrapatha nakshatra. They should perform graha shanti and chant grahana parihara mantram beginning, during and after the graham is left. Offer wheat with dakshina to a brahmana.

4) Pregnant women should take prior care and should be doing prayers for garbharakshanam. They should be at home and do prayers.

5) Taking holy dip in sacred river is highly auspicious.

6) Gayatri mantram, Vishnu Sahastranamam, Aditya hrudayam, Mahamrityunjaya japam, Surya mantrams, Sharangathi mantrams should be chanted during this time. Some people do chanting of laksha japa...

7) Entire period of eclipse is said to be a parvakala. Hence during this period performing prayer, punascharana (of upadesa mantra), pithru tarpana during mid time, daanam during the closing time are considered to be very sacred and celestial.

8) If the solar eclipse ends after the sun set then the one must fast during night and consume food only next day morning after sun rise.

9) It is believed that going round a cow giving birth to a calf during this period is equivalent to going round the earth (Bhoo Pradakshina). Giving cow as daanam is highly auspicious.
