This festival is marked as return of King Mahabali after being pushed by Lord Vishnu to patala once a year. I also heard that the aswameda yagnya done by Mahabali was at the banks of Narmada river and Lord in the form of Vamana arrived there. And Kerala was formed by Parasurama from the sea which was after vamana avatar. What is the significance of celebrating this occassion specially in Kerala.
