Guest guest
Swamin Shriman Krishnan Muralidharan Swamy's mail i have given below. The doubt is Why Namavali,Ashtothram and Sahasranamam differs from one DD to another. One is based on Padma Puranam, another one is based on Agni Puranam, Skanda Puranam and so on. All are vishnu Temples. Is there any specific Namavali,Ashtothram and Sahasranamam for each DD. Is anyone pl clarify this.DasanThirukkudanthai K.S.Jegennaathan098412 36647 Krishnan Muralidharan <kmurali_sg Re: Divya Desam ks.jegennaathan Monday, 28 December, 2009, 7:51 AM Dear Sri. Jegannathan, Greetings and namaste. I have seen your articles on Divya Desams via Dinam Oru Divya Desam and they are very informative. I was wondering whether you also collect (or have information on) the specific stotras or archanas used in various Divya Desams - including those which are not part of 108 Divya Desams? I ardently collect rare stutis, ashtottarams and Sahasrnama stotras on various deities and let me give a few of my experiences: 1. Recently I had the opportunity to donate some money towards Swami Kaingarya for Thirumeyyam temple. I learnt from the Bhattachariar that they use Satyamurthy Ashtottaram for archana (the normal being Krishna Ashtottaram) which is available in Brahmanda Puranam. I do have the mula of Brahmanda Puraanam published by Motilal Banarsidas but I am unable to find any reference to Satya kshetra. I have requested the Bhattachariar to translate the grantha lipi he has into Tamil and send it to me. 2. When I had darshan at Thirukkovilur a few months back, I learnt that they another ashtottaram known as Narayana Ashtottaram. The Bhattachariar was not able to pinpoint the source of this. I am not sure whether there could be another Narayana Sahasranama somewhere. 3. I had darshan at Sri. Parashurama Temple in Kovalam near Thiruvananthapuram a couple of years back. I enquired whether they had specific Parashurama Ashtottaram or Sahasranama but the Bhattachariar mentioned that they use only Vishnu Ashtottaram/Sahasranama. But I recently learnt from internet sources that a Parashurama/Bhargava Sahasranama exists and a manuscript is available in Bikaner library. When I searched for the source, it is mentioned that this Sahasranama is from Agni Puran. Again, I could not find any reference to Parashurama in Agni Puranam moola I have (published by Chowkhamba). 4. So far, I have come across about 10-12 different ashottarams on Vishnu and about 20 Sahasranama Stotras. I presume there will be many more and it is quite possible that some of the divya desams have their own ashtottarams and Sahasranamas (and also for Thayar). To cite an example, Srimushnam has a separate Bhuvaraha Ashtottaram and Ambjuavalli Ashtottaram for Thayar. The Varaha Sahasranama of Skanda Purana is on Srimushnam only. If you have any information or any rare stotra, will it be possible to share with me or point me to some learned scholars who might have this information? Thanks & Regards, Muralidharan Krishnan Muralidharan <kmurali_sg Re: Re: Divya Desam "Jegennaathan K.S." <ks.jegennaathan, "Kinchitkaram Trust" <kinchitkaram Tuesday, 29 December, 2009, 3:44 AM Dear Swamin, Namaste. A couple of more points in this regard; 1. Certain temples seem to have their ashtottarams which are not used any where else - e.g. Guruvayur (Vatapura); for Srirangam, apparently Thayar has a separate Ashtottaram (Ranganayika Ashtottaram based on Sri Suktam) but not sure whether Perumal has a separate; similarly, I recently came across a Vittala Ashottaram said to be from Padma Puran - I presume this is meant Pandharipur in Maharashtra (but I am unable to locate this in Padma Puran). The first line of the Vittala Ashtottaram goes like this: shrutvA nAma sahasram me viTTalasya mahAnvitam | This suggests that the preceding chapter could have been a Sahasranama on Vittala - but as I said I not able to find both in Padma Puran. I even wrote to Gita Press (who published this Shatanama Stotra Sangraha) but they don't have any clue. 2. I also know that the following sahasranamas exist but unable to locate them secure a copy of them: a. Dhanvantari Sahasranama b. Satyanarayana Sahasranama - I have this in a namavali form - akArAdi kshakAranta - in alphabetical order but unable to know the source of this. c. Purushottama Sahasranama - said to be composed by Vallabhacharya 3. I am not able to understand why certain stutis attributed to purans are not to be found in the purans. To give some examples; a. The Varaha Sahasranama is said to be from Skanda Purana - but I found another rare Vishnu Sahasranama but not Varaha Sahasranama b. Nrusimha Sahasranama is said to be from Nrusimha Purana but it is not found in the printed version c. Venkatesha Sahasranama is said to be from Brahmanda Purana but again I don't see it in my moola d. Venkatesha Ashottaram is said to be from Varaha Puran but I don't see any rereference about Tirupati in the copy I have published by Motilal Banarsidas. e. Ashtadashabhuja Mahalakshmi Sahasranama is said to be from Padma Puran but I am yet to locate it. Thanks & Regards, Muralidharan The INTERNET now has a personality. YOURS! See your Homepage.
