Fellow VMSers,

Here is a summary of the free format discussion that took place during

the last session of the VMS conference. Thanks to Gopi Boray for

taking down the main points. I have added some notes to expand the

points.

1. Dr. Kurudi Muralidhar mentioned that we should have S.M.A.R.T

objectives (SMART: Specific Measurable Achievable Result Oriented

Tasks) . Objectives should come from the people who have to do the work.

This way they will be committed to the goals.

2. Introduce a Matrimonial column- There was some discussion on this.

Some people said having this will dilute the goals of the VMS. It was

decided to go forward with this, since this can be achieved at low cost

through the Web site. Action item was taken up by Phanindra on behalf

of the Web masters. Current status: In Progress.

3. Obtain Mailing list from Puthige Matha Swamiji (Vasu Murthy).

There was a suggestion that we should use the mailing list that was

collected by the sri Puthige swamiji during his trip. We should be

careful with the list, because lot of non-madhvas are on the list.

Action item was assigned to Vasu Murthy/Directors to get the list from

swamiji. Current status: Vasu Murthy and Directors to contact swamiji to

get the list.

4. Develop a Data Base of VMS members (Dr. & Mrs. Muralidhar). Dr.

Muralidhar volunteered to take care of the mailing list. He has assumed

responsibility for the VMS mailing list. VMS E-mailing list has already

been started. Current status: Initial mailing list has been started.

5. Publish a News letter every six months (Manish , Narahari and

Srinivasan ). It was suggested that we should publish newsletters every

six months. It was the responsibility of everybody to give items to the

newsletters. Narahari said that he and Manish are bachelors who are

interested in the Philosophical aspects of the newsletter. Srinivasan GV

voluteered to join the editorial board to coordinate input from VMS

activities and community news perspective. It was decided to distribute

the newsletter electronically to all the regional coordinators and

distribute it in paper form in the local community events and temples.

6. Start Adult Education Program. People said that adults and children

should be able to learn mAdhva Philosophy from the beginning. Important

sources are Dr. Balaji Hebbar’s Indian Philosophy courses arranged in

the Washington area. Dr. Hebbar is willing to travel to other cities to

teach the course provided the travel expenses are taken care of. Dr.

Hebbar is donating all the proceeds for the course for the VMS as a

fund-raising avenue for VMS. Tara Prakashana is planning on postal

course from vidyApeetha. It was suggested that an “Ask Dr. Hebbar”

feature be provided in the VMS website so that people can submit

questions for formal answers from Dr. Hebbar. Current status : Courses

are going on in Washington. Mini-course arranged in NJ in November.

7. News letter to incorporate articles from members & other well known

writers.

8. Organize Spiritual Retreats Occassionally. It was suggested that we

should have mini-spiritual retreats in the local areas across 2-3 states

every couple of months. For example. People in NJ,PA and DC can have

mini-retreats once every couple of months.

9. Arrange Fund raising events. It was suggested that in Bangalore,

there is a group that goes and reads complete sumadhva vijaya in

somebody’s home in exchange for a donation. Similar things can be done

here.

10. Tax status of VMS contribution. SathyaNarayana is working to get

tax-exempt status for VMS. It will take about a year. Current status: In

progress.

11.

I request the members to look at these action items and give comments

and make suggestions to make VMS useful for all of us.

Finally, here are some improvement to the onelist service, some of

which are nice.

Over the past month, we've been able

to add several new features, including:

* Email Commands

We've added several email commands for subscribing, unsubscribing,

and

switching between normal and digest subscriptions. For more

information

about these commands, please visit the List Owner's Manual in the

Help Center.

* Easier Registration and Confirmation

We've made registering with ONElist easier. And we've added a second

way to confirm your account. Included with the confirmation email

is a URL that you can go to to confirm your account.

* Post Message

The List Center now includes the ability to post messages to a list

directly from the ONElist web site.

Regards,

Vasu Murthy
