Guest guest
VaishNava friends, I recently came across a CD called " Vedic Chants of India " by Ravishankar and produced by George Harrison (Angel Records- #CDQ7243 8 55948 2 3). I am very impressed by the CD. I want to share some of my impressions. The CD has some shlokas (ganapathi, saraswathi, asato mA.., sahanA vavatu etc.), BramhAnanda valli of taitirIya upanishad (section that lists the gradations in the bliss of various beings , very important principle of Dvaita), Gayathri mantra, mahaa mrityunjaya mantra etc. Whole thing is rendered very well. Ravishankar has woven the chantings with some musical introductions and overlays. He has used minimalist approach taking the notes used in the vedic chantings. It creates a highly evocative atmosphere and is very effective. Chantings of Gayathri Mantra and mahaa mrityunjaya mantra are very well done with a lot of spiritual energy. I highly recommend this CD to everyone. It makes my morning commute of 45-50 minutes very enjoyable and puts you in the right mood for work! If you are looking for a CD that contains the only the chants, you may be disappointed, in my opinion but musical additions and interludes are a very worthy addition. The liner notes contain the sanskrit mantras, their transliteration and their translation. The translation is not always compatible with the Dvaita view. Overall, a very good effort. I wish we could have similar CDs with mAdhva/VaishNava stotras. Cassette by Tara Prakashana has provided an excellent start in this regard. This kind of work could be an example of what VMS can aim for in the future. Together we should be able to do it. sri krishNaya namaH, Vasu -- ================================= Vasu Murthy Bell Atlantic Global Networks vmurthy W:703-247-7314 Fax:703-247-7359 ==================================
