Guest guest
Hi krishNabhaktas, May Lord KrishNa's blessings be on all of you and your families in the new year. I want to take this opportunity to summarize the VMS activities for the past year. Beginning of the year 1998 saw the tail end of sri sugunendra Theertha swamiji's tour of the US. I still remember the mini-VMS get together in Washington area in January. It marked the end to an remarkable experience for all of us. Seeds for the formal VMS organization was planted at that time. It took a while to get the formal organization incorporated. It was completed in July. Immediately, we started on efforts to have a VMS conference in the Washington area during the labor day weekend. It was heartnening to see the enthusiasm in the community for such a meeting. People had driven long distances to be there. There was palpable bhakti, enthusiasm and comradarie at the conference. It was nice to see the enthusiasm spread to the west coast and the VMS conference on the west coast in November. The conference was well attended and received good publicity in the national Indian ethnic newspapers. There are four main VMS chapters active in the California (S.F. area), Washington DC, Michigan and Newjersey areas. I have had requests to start chapters in other areas. VMS mailing list was started on the Vijayadashami day and now there are about 70 people on the list. VMS obtained the domain name of .org. Dr. Hebbar has conducted several classes in the NJ area on Indian Philosophical systems under the VMS umbrella. He is teaching two courses on Indian Philosophy currently in the Washington area. VMS Washington chapter arranged a Devara nAma concert by Mr. Narasimha Nayak in November. Geetha Jayanthi celebrations took place in California and Washington. Plans for 99: VMS web site is being updated and will be unveiled shortly. VMS newsletter editors have started to work on the next edition. Please send any inputs to the editors Manish Tandon (mtandon) and Narahari Pujar (hpujar). Michigan Chapter is arranging Vadiraja and Vyasaraja Aradhane in March. Michigan chapter has tentative plans for a VMS conference in that area in Summer. Efforts to get tax-exemption status are underway. My Wish list: Here is my wish list for things to happen over the next couple years. I encourage others to submit their wish list for things to be done by VMS. By God's grace, some of wishes will come true. Here is my list: 1. Involve youngsters in the VMS, cater to the needs of imparting of our tradition and philosophy to them. 1.5. Fund specific projects that are interest to all mAdhvas- restoration of important places of pilgrimage, places where mAdhva teachings are taught according to tradition etc. 2. Do projects to archive old texts that are unavailable or deteriorating, republish old books published by Dvaita stalwarts earlier in the century. 3. Publish books that explain mAdhva Philosophy and religion to children and lay people in English. 4. Do mini-camps to teach mAdhva religious practices to youngsters. Summary: It is gratifying to see the VMS sprout and grow into a formal organization serving the needs of the community all over the country in just over a year. This is just the beginning. Lot more needs to happen and will happen with your input and participation. Please send your thoughts and comments to the list. Finally, I want thank the volunteers who made all of this possible with their dedication and hard work. sri krishNaya namaH, Vasu -- ================================= Vasu Murthy Bell Atlantic Global Networks vmurthy W:703-247-7314 Fax:703-247-7359 ==================================
Guest guest
Vasu: As part of your wish list you have suggested activities for youngsters. I would very much like to approach Harish B. at the temple to have a 1/2 session for kids on shloka/mantra recitation. Do you know if something like that exists or can we get something like that started? Please advise.
