Dhyana snana - 1

Dear friends,

I am starting a series of postings on Dhyaana

snaana, which appears in the vaamana puraaNa. The

english translations are from a book titled " Glories

of Gayathri " by Shri Srinivasachar Waiker.

 

DHYAANA SNAANA

------- ------

shaucham thu dvividham prOktham baaHyamaanthara mEva

cha

mRujjalaabhyaam kRutham baaHyam

bhaavashudDhisthadhantharam ||

 

Methods of achieving purity are of two kinds, one

external ensured by bathing using water etc. The other

is internal purification gained by repeating the name

of God.

 

apavithra pavithrO vaa sarvaavasthaam gathO & pi vaa

yah smarethpuNdarIkaaksham sa baaHyaabhyamthara

shuchih ||

 

Whether one is pure or impure, in all stages of life,

chanting the name of punNdariikaaksha ensures better

form of purification.

 

Once the external bathing is over, for the purposes of

internal purification, one has to observe meditative

bath call Dhyana Snana. This is prescribed in the

Vaamana Puraana. It is merely chanting of 13 stanzas,

or mental bathing (maanasa snaana). One should get

this Dhyana Snana by-heart.

thrivikramam thIrThapaadham nathvaa saRvaagha

naashanam

Dhyaana snaanam pravakshyaami sarva sathkarma

sidhDhayE || 1 ||

 

Having bowed down to the sacred feet of Lord

Trivikrama, I narrate the meditative bathing, the

chanting of which not only destroys all sins but

is also rewarding for all spiritual rights/karmas.

 

shrI braHmOvaacha

 

The four headed Brahma Speaks,

 

svasThitham puNdarIkaaksham mamthramURthim harim

smarEth

anamthaadhithya samkaasham vaasudhEvam chathurbhujam

|| 2 ||

 

Remember Lord Hari, whom the Vedas praise. He has

beautiful lotus like eyes and is dwelling in our

hearts. He is also called Vasudeva who is with four

arms and an effulgunce of infinite number of suns.
