Guest guest
Dear Sattvikas, I am following the discussions on this subject. Though presently I do not have books to quote, I would like to mention a few points on the subject which I have gathered. 1. No mantra should be practiced without 'upadesha'. 2.Gayatri 'upadesha' is to be done by one's father, except the exception as stated by Sri Kehsha Rao. Normally the father should do 10000 gayatri japa in the week preceeding the 'upanayanam' for the boy . This is also done secretly by covering with a cloth the two to ensure that others do not hear. As normally 'yatis' are not to attend functions, the 'upadesha' by a 'yati' cannot be done. 3. All other mantras should be got initiated by a 'yati'. This is what I was told by my 'vidya guru' when I asked him for 'upadesha' of 'Narayana ashtakshara mantra'. It is said that one should have 'upadesha' of Narayana ashtakshra mantra' before learning to do 'devara puja'. 4. apart from 'Narayana astakshara mantra' normally a vaishnava should, preferably, get 'upadesha' of(i)Krishna shadakshara mantra (ii)Vasudeva dwadashakshara mantra (111) matruka mantra and (iv) Shivashadakshara mantra. It may be noted that the no. of syllables includes 'om' at the beginning. 5. Every mantra ,should be practiced regularly once it is initiated. It should be practiced with the proper'anga nyasa' and 'karanyasa' and with 'om'at the beginning and end of the mantra for each recitation 6. Narayana ashtakshara mantra should be recited(japa) thrice the no. of times of the Gayatri in every 'sandhya'. 7. The 'upadesa' being a secret between the guru and sishya, the name of the guru from whom it one got initiated. 8. Other mantras, like Dhanvantari mantra also can be got initiated from a 'Yati'. 9. All mantras should be prcticed with the maximum austerity possible(madi). With best wishes, BKR Rao ___________ Free instant messaging and more at http://messenger.
