Krishna Bhakthas:

Yesterday, September 15, was the birthday of H. H. Sugunendra Theertha of

Puthige Matha of Udupi. In connection with this event, Swamiji conducted a

mahapuja at the house of Sudha Kanthan.

Despite torrential rains, more than 60 people turned up on the occasion.

Following the puja, we heard the songs from Vaadishachar and Prasanna

Padigar. After the tottilu seva, Vaadishachar spoke briefly inviting others

to do so as well.

Dr. Dinakar Rai introduced Swamiji as one in a distinguished line of ascetics

in the parampara of Sri Madhvacharya. Strangely, Dr. Rai, who hails from

Pajaka, the same village of our illustrious preceptor, quoted Sankaracharya

to say that mahaanubhavas come from time to time to do good to mankind.

Next to speak was Bindu Madhavan. He thanked Swamiji for not only coming to

the US a second time, but also for helping create and energize the Vishwa

Maadhva Sangha. Sri Bindu Madhavan also detailed the recent activities of

VMS, in addition to the satsangas that resulted from Swamiji's presence.

Finally, Swamiji himself spoke. The purpose of this trip, he said, was to

strengthen VMS and place it on a firm footing. Swamiji made requests to

several members of the audience to come forward and organize chapters of VMS.

This, he said, would be instrumental in exposing the multifaceted Madhva

culture to our next generation, who may otherwise be bereft of cultural

moorings. In this context, Swamiji was all praise for Mr. Kanthan who is an

erudite Sanskrit scholar, possessing many rare Sanskrit books.

Lastly, it was a sight to see Swamiji serve food to those seated. He

described holgi as a food very dear to Mukhya Prana Devaru and hence it

should be consumed by all.

The function wound up at about 11 PM with Swamiji leaving for the house of

Hunsur Sriprasad.

I don't know if Sankara said that or not. But one thing is sure. He

himself came to do more harm than good and it really doesn't make any

sense to quote Sankara when speaking of good deeds to mankind !!!! The

world would have been better off if " Mahaanubhavas " of his type don't

show up.

" The greatest harm however done to Hindusim by him (Samkara) was the

theory of illusion (Maya) to explain away everything in the world or in

the life as unreal and Brahman alone as the reality. This dangerous

doctrine, which is an illusion in itself, being no more than an

extra-ordinary feat of Samkara's philosophical genius, has been the

greatest weakness of Hinduism and has been more responsible than anything

else as a single factor throughout subsequent ages for the trait of

hypocrisy to be found generally in the nature of an average Hindu.

Indeed, it has made the Hindu an object of ridicule and humiliation the

world over " - Swami Anand, " Path of Saints- As the Fulfilment of Vedanta

(B.V. Bhavan, 1977)
