Dear Friends:

During the VaDagalai-Tengalai dispute at Tirupati, HH VyAsa

TIrtha was given the right to worship Tirupati ShrInivAsa

devaru by ImmaDI SauLava Narasimha of Chandragiri. VyAsa TIrtha

did this faithfully for 12 years from 1486-1498. After this it

went back into the hands of the shrI-VaiShNavas.

As a mark of gratitude and respect to VyAsa TIrtha for his

timely help, the shrI-VaiShNava community at Tirupati gave

certain permanent privilages to the VyAsarAya MaTha. These

privilages were:

1. Receiving the reigning pontiff of the VyAsarAya MaTha with

divaTige salAm whenever he visits Tirumalai.

2. Allowing the reigning pontiff to perform pradakShiNA at the

inner prAkAra of the VenkaTesha shrine while seated in the

palanquin.

3. Allowing the reigning pontiff to personally worship the mUla

mUrti of shrInivAsa in the inner sanctum.

These privilages were suddenly revoked by some jealous creatures

(either TTD authorities or the shrI-VaiShNava clergy at

Tirumalai) in the early 1990s. The matter is now in the

courts.

I request both sides to investigate this matter and see if

this can be resolved amicably and with a permanent rider to

prohibit such things from happening in the future.

The MAdhvas are seeking their due rights and no more. It is

just a matter of principle and fairness.

HH VyAsa TIrtha is one of the 3 Supermen of our faith and

this is the least that we modern MAdhvas can do to uphold

his great legacy.

VMS should work with ABMM on this from our side. Mr. Mani and

his folks can show their true goodwill towards us by working

with us sincerely in this regard in the true spirit of

VedAnta Deshika!

Comments are invited.

regards,

Hari-vAyu smaraNa,

Let me first say that if the Vyasaraya Matha has traditional

privileges that were unceremoniously revoked, they should

be restored. Now,

As far as I know, there was no significant Vadagalai-Tengalai

dispute at Tirupati. In any case 1486 is too early a date for

such a fight, since the whole notion of two sects emerged

later.

The clergy of the temple, though they wear forehead marks like

Sri Vaishnavas, are *not* Sri Vaishnavas of the Ramanujiya tradition.

They are " Vaikhanasa " Vaishnavas (followers of the Vaikhanasa Grhya

Sutra and Vaikhanasa Agama) and consider themselves to be hereditarily

descended from the Sage Vikhanas. They do not honor the Alvars or

Ramanuja in their Guru Parampara, nor do they undergo the sacrament

of chakrAnkaNa (tapta mudra dharaNa) at the hands of a Sri Vaishnava

acharya.

The official Sri Vaishnava relationship with Tirupati exists only

through the Tirupati Jiyar Matha, presided by the Tirupati Jiyar Swami,

a sannyasi. The Swami has rights when it comes to the " saaRRumuRai

sEvai " (also known as Jiyar sEvai) where the traditional Sri Vaishnava

concluding prayers are recited. He also has some rights during

festivals, but that is pretty much all. The rest is controlled

by the Vaikhanasa priests and the mirasdars. In all likelihood,

the revocation of the Vyasaraya Matha privileges were done by

these Vaikhanasas or the TTD officials, not the Sri Vaishnavas.

daasan,

Mani
