Guest guest
Dear Friends: Dr. Cavale and ShrI Arvind Acharya are quite right in what they have pointed out about the common heritage of what is often referred to in the academia as the " Abrahamic " faiths. However, we must leave the Zoroastrians out. They are actually a sister religion to Vedic Hinduism! In fact, this semester I am at the tail end of a course called " Doctrine & Debate in World Religions " that I am teaching. The 3 Semetic religions too have a long history of doctrinal controversies. Believe me, it is the same old deal there too. Further in China we have the Confucians, Taoists and Buddhists similarly involved in such a dialectical encounter. Sometimes even within one religion itself there is deep hair-splitting controversy. For example, the 4 schools of Confucians in China have a bitter debate over Human Nature: one saying it is innately good, the other saying it is innately evil, the third saying it is innately both and fourth saying it is innately neither. Each quotes Confucius in his favor marshalling all the logic at his disposition in order to vindicate his viewpoint. It is truly amazing! In fact, Prasad Bhargava a VMS member from NJ is organizing a 2 day lecture by me in his house over the Jewish-Christian-Muslim polemics over the centuries. This will be sometime in the Spring. ALL are welcome to attend. Another such one is being planned by the Detroit chapter of VMS. Anyone is welcome there too. Some of the issues between the Xians and Muslims that I will talk on are: 1. Is Jesus God or merely an eminent prophet? 2. Which is God's Word the Bible or the Qur'an? 3. Is God Trinitarian or Unitarian? 4. Is the advent of Prophet Muhammad foretold in the Bible or not? regards B.N.Hebbar
