Dear HariBhakthas,

Shri Purandara Dasaru has composed a devara nama describing the

power of Hari nama sankeerhta as follows

" kaliyuga dolu hari nAmava nenedare pulokotigalu uddarasuvavU..... " .

This has been reiterated in many other songs by Shri Purandara

Dasaru and other dasaru also. This 'nama sankeerhthna' is important

part of our 'Aradhana' and is being practiced everywhere including in

Udupi Krishna Temple.

This Nama sankeerthane is observed as a festival in and around

Koteshwar,(30 Km from Udupi) where a big community of madhwa families

reside. Koteshwar consists of many small villages and each village has

got a temple. Each temple celbrates Nama sankeertha Uthsava every year.

It will be of one full day non stop bhajan. It starts in the morning

with " Deepa sthapana " , (installing kamba deepa) and ends on the next

day with " Deepa Visarjana " . In some temples this function will be

preceeded by bhajanas in the evening hours for 7 days or 12 days and

the on the final day it will be round the clock. Each village has got a

team of devotees and they visit all the other villages for bhajans.

The bhajan will be done in a classical way, with team circling

around the " Deepa " , placed in the center of the hall, singing the songs

with 'thala', 'chitike' etc. The special part of these bhajans is the

'dance'.(Some of you might have seen a form of this, in Udupi Shri

Krishna Temple or here is Washington DC or Detroit when Shri

Vageeshachar demonstrated this and taught to others. It is only very y

preliminary dance) The whole team dances in tune with the 'thala'. The

dance starts with slow steps and reaches a peak and sometimes it will

be non stop for half an hour. Some teams wear uniform dress and perform

" koolata " also. There are some special dance styles and special songs,

patents of each team. The whole temple will be decorated beautifully

and the whole day will be spent in sangeetha seva and narthana seva.

The whole village assembles there for this function. People from

outstation also come for this function. Special Mahapooja will be done

in the noon and in the evening and next day also. There will be big

feast on next day for the whole village.

It is a unique style of Bhajans and dance. The people from this

place have started local teams in other places also like Chinthamani,

Tumkur, Arasikere etc. If you happen to visit this place during Jan -

March, you may look for an opportunity to witness this grand festival.

" neen-yako ninna hangyako ranga | ninna namadha bala ondhidhdhare

saaku "
