Kroda Shankaranarayana kshethra -

Kroda Shankaranarayana is 16 miles east, from Kundapur on the way to

Shimoga, on the bank of Vaaraahi river. This place is 34 miles from

Udupi and 26 miles from Kollur. The glory of this place is described in

detail in Pushkara khanda of Padhma puraana in 24 chapters. The present

day temple can be dated back to about 700 to 800 years ago & has been

influenced by the Kings of Vijanagara, Ikkeri & Keladi who have

presented the deities with gold & silver ornaments. In the day of

Dhanur Sankramana a religious funtion called Muhurtha Bali is performed

every year. Gowri, Laxmi temples in the vicinity increase the beauty of

this place.

According to mythology, long long back two deamons named 'Khara' and

'Ratta' did long 'tapas' and got special blessings from Lord Shankara

that they would be killed only when Shri Hari and Shri Shankar

incarnate with a single body. After this, they declared them selves as

'God' and with great pride they started troubling everyone. Then five

sages namely Jamadhagni, Maandavya, Agasthya, Lomasha and KrOda did

tapas to please Shri Hari and Shri Hara. As per their prayer, Shri Hari

and Shri Shankar came down to earth together, with Shri Shankar on

right side and Shri Hari on left side. Lord ShankarNarayana killed Khar

and Ratta and stayed in this place in the form of two diffeent linga.

There is a small hill nearby called 'Kroadagiri' where sage Kroda

did tapas. This place is very close to western Ghats. Since both Shri

Hari and Shri Hara are in the form of 'Linga', some people claim that

they are same and equal. but the speciality here is that Shri Hara

linga is lean and Shri Hari linga is stout. Also it is told that the

priest worships Shri Hara linga more and offers more 'naivedya' and

Shri Hari linga is not given equal importance. Shri Vadiraja while

praying Lord ShankaraNarayana, quotes these things to prove that Shri

Hari and Shri Hara are not equal and Shri Hari is 'sarvoththama'. Shri

Vadiraja explains that the word Shankaranaraya is to be understood as

Shankar and Narayana( two are different and not identicle) or Shri

Narayana with Shankar meaning Shri Narayana is sarvoththama and

supreme. Shri Vadiraja quotes another example of human body where Jiva

and Paramatma both are residing together but jiva is different from

Paramatma. In the same way, though Shri Hari and Shri Hara are together

here, they are different and Shri Hari is supreme. Shri Vadiraja

prays Shri Hara and Shri Hara together but it is to be understood that

the adjectives used are to be linked with appropriate Gods, with

'tharathamya' and not for both equally. The river Vaarahi is called

as Shukthimathi in this prayer.

Shri Vadiraja describes Shri Shankarnarayana beautifully in the last

three shlokas. The words are coined so beautifully that it can be

appreciated only when we chant the shlokas in Sankrit. The english

language can not translate that beauty of Sanskrit.
