Guest guest
A PERSONAL APPEAL Dear Adyaathmic Friends, As a preranaya from the Lord, I am placing before you all an appeal from a small, humble Matha in our illustrious Madhwa lineage which requires your generous and timely support for its continued existence and functioning. Sri Balagaru Akshobhya Tirtha Matha, situated in a small village on the banks of the river Tunga in the picturesque natural surroundings of Sahyadri Hills of the Western Ghats in Shimoga-Agumbe Road near Tirthahalli had its origin during the times of the famous Sri Akshobhya Tirtha, a direct deciple of Sri Madhwacharya and the preceptor for Sri Jayatheertha. Sri Rama Narasimha Devaru and other ancient idols have been in continueous worship from the inception of this Matha. Due to economic hardships and the passage of time, the Matha building in the village of Balagaru needs renovation and the present pontiff of this Matha, Sri Raghubhushana Tirtha Swamiji and his group are currently staying and carrying on their nithya pooja etc in the Poorna Prajna Vidya Peeta in Bangalore. This Matha needs financial contributions to become self-sufficient and continue its existence. A band of very devoted, reliable volunteers (personally known to me) in Bangalore have taken upon themselves to muster the financial and moral support for this humble Matha. Each one of us, so generousely blessed by our Lord, to lead comfortable and luxurious lives in this country (USA), owe to ourselves to come together and make a positive impact in helping small, humble Mathas to survive and help them do their service to the Lord and the society. Insignificant small amounts, such as what we spend for gas for our cars per month, can make a reasonable difference to these humble institutions. We need to help them survive because they too have their place in the overall scheme of things. Here are the various schemes suggested by the Matha. 1. Rs 5000 for 10 sq. feet of construction of the Matha buiding. 2. Rs 2000 for one day's seva to Lord Sri Rama Narasimha 3. Morning Maha Pooja and Hastodaka for one day in a year, Rs. 1000 4. Aradhana on Sri Rama Navami, Sri Narasimha Jayanthi, Sri Anantha Vratha, Sri Akshobya Tirtha, Sri Raghumanya Tirtha, Rs 5000 total or Rs. 1000 individual function. 5. Rs. 1000 for Shaswatha Seva, like pithru karya or vrathas/poojas of individual interest. As you can see, all the above range from $25 to $125 only, and we can definitely afford to support this cause. I am pledging $100 and I pray to the Lord for the continued prosperity of this humble Matha. Please send your contributions in US dollars to me and I will send one consolidated check to the Matha. If you would like to contribute in rupees, please do so directly to Sri Raghubhushana Tirtha Swamiji / Mr. M. G. Vedavyas, Honorary Secretary, Balagaru Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Seva Samithi, Poorna Prajna Vidyapeeta, Kathirguppa Main Road, Bangalore-560028, India. Namaskara. Guest guest
Dear Dr. Bindumadhavan, I was really touched by your gesture in posting a personal appeal to other members of the VMS and the quick response from some friends in this regard. I am encouraged by all this in trying to share some more information with all my VMS friends on this subject. You have used the expression " Humble Matha " is referring to the Balagaru Matha. The adjective is best applied not to the Matha but to the personality of the Swamiji, Sri 108 Raghubhushana tirtha. It is difficult to guage a person by his age (below 30 years), learning (which he does not wear on his sleeve as most others do) and above all his total detachment from the usual desires which motivate people even in exalted stations as we have generally seen. The Ashrama building is virtually falling to pieces, there is no regular income from land, assets etc to take care of even the daily Pujas. But it took a great deal of persuasion from all of us of the Swamiji even to think of starting a project to rebuild the Ashrama. His stock answer was - I am happy with what the good Lord has provided. Some efforts were how ever made and I am glad to inform you that the Swamiji has so far invested all his savings (around Rs. 8 lakhs) in the renovation work. He needs another Rs.3.5 lakhs or so to complete the works on hand. The Swamiji is very clear that he will not ask for support himself, but will gratefully accept any thing (even Rs. 10 or less) offered by devotees voluntarily. In my fairly long life, I have not really come across any one with such total resignation and acceptance of God's will - which is even more remarkable considering his age and that he was placed in the position by God's will under difficult circumstances. It is this tradition of willing acceptance of poverty and penury - if ordained by the Supreme Being - with undiminished devotion to the Supreme Being that is perhaps the finest part of out tradition - remember the Dasa koota and such sages like Sri Vijayadhwaja, who asked that they should be deprived of all wealth lest their minds get distracted with it from God. In this sense, I consider that Sri Raghuvallabha Tirtha is perhaps the richest person, whom I know and also one of the finest specimens of our ascetic treasures. I have written this only to share with all of you my thoughts. My own opinion is that the cause is one of the finest, the organisation which receives the donation is a Sathpathra in the best sense of the term and those who give such aid will receive munificent acknowledgements from the Supreme Being. I am also sure that the Swamiji's works will get done - as God's will and that we will continue to get God's blessings through such persons. It is not that we have to keep even such fragile institutions going as against the more ostentatious and publicity conscious units, but that it is our duty to do what we can to see that such real ascetics are looked after by society. The value of the food offered to a real ascetic - becomed infinite in extent, when it is done with the sole desire to please God. Perhaps, we all have a chance to do some thing like that in this case even in Kaliyuga. NAPSRao
