GO SAMREKSHANA TRUST

AN APPEAL FOR SAVING COWS

FROM MAHARASSHTRA TO TIRUNELVELI

The Bhakti Movement in India was initiated by the Alwars of Tamli Nadu and

led by Nammalwar

(8th Century) who incarnated on the banks of Tambraparni. The hymns of the

Alwars eset aside all the ritualistic veils that separated the common man from

the Supreme. the vedic ideas were channelised through soul-ravishing poesy

written in simple Tamil. The Bakti cult of singingwas

taken towords north by Ramananda and soon it spread all over india. In

Maharashtra the Bhakti

cults settled down as varkari sampradaya(12th century). Wearing a garland of

Tulsi beads,the

followers seek to overcome the ego and sing in self-forgetful ecstasy about

vittala of pandharpur.

The first great expounder of this sampradaya was Jnanadev (13th century).

For the varkaris, purity of life is most important and hence the tradition

has been of great help

in organising the society on the principles of truth, respect for

woman,vegetarianism and sterling

honesty . Singing bhajans by great devotees like Jnanadev , tukaram, namdev and

Jana Bai has

helped in percolating these ideals into the hearts of every one of followers.

The sampradaya

consists the Jnaneswari,EknathiBhagavat and tukaram Gatha as its

Prasthana-trayi.During the

late 18th century, the Maharastrian bhakti hymns of the varkari saints entered

Tamil Nadu for

emellishing the devotional content Katha Kalakshepam, through the decline of the

Kalakshepam

programmes during the last fifty years has meant estrangementfrom these

wonderful verses that

build a bridge to help us enter God Consciousness.

Fortunately for us,a welccome phenomenon has occurred bringing the bhakti

cult in its varkari

sampradaya to its roots on the bank of Tambraparni. K.V . Ganapati Moorthy,

hailing from a

family of Bhajan singers of Kadayanallur , a village on Tambraparni become

interested in the

Abhangs by the Maharastrian saints. His guru, Sri Krishnapremi disclosed to him

that popular

ising the abhangs would be a worthy cause for taking up as young man's mission

for life. He

also adviced his disciple that the ectastic singing should be accompanied by an

equally

worthy service to the Lord. Thus was born the Go-shala in Kadayanallur . Was not

Vittala

brought up in a cowherd settlement?

The rejection of aged cows is a gresat sin,for the cow is truely our mother

.. The Go-shala seek

to give refuge to such cows.Approximately, close to the Go-shala, within forty

kilometers is famous

temple of Vittlapuram Where the presiding deity is Panduranga with Rukmanee.

Totally dedicated

to the name Vittla, Sri Ganapati Moorthy has been leading the Sri Vittoba Bhajan

Mandali at

Kadayanallur in disseminating the abhangs and has already released two cassettes

to help the

maintenance of the Go-shala.

It is a priceless experience listening to the rendering of the Marathi

Abhangs by Ganapati

Moorthy who laces his singing with tamil explanations of the particular

contextwithout sounding

off-key. The abhangs are path way to a direct vision of God but they do not

divorce from our

society. For, instance the pundalik legend which is very important for the

sampradaya teaches

devotion towords one's parents. Even God has to yield place when the devotee

attends upon

his parents!.

Indeed , the aspirant's devotion does not stop here.He should love all

creation for the Divine

is behind all this we see; and nnothing can please Gopala more than the

maintenance of a Go-

shala for cows that have given their very best to sustain human beings. By this

positive gesture,

the Abhangs that worship vittala through musical words gain in

significance.Ganapati Moorthy's

music is meaningful because it isbacked by this idealism, and those who come

forwword in this

significant extension of the sampradaya would be traversing the pathway to

Pandharpur.
