Guest guest
Dear Haribhakthas, 2nd Feb 2001, Friday is the Aradhana day of our great guru Shri Acharya. i.e Shri Madhva Navami. This is a very auspicious day for all of us and grand celebrations is planned in many places in US as well as in India. Here are my thoughts just to share with you all. Due to recent devastating earthquake in Gujarat, India, thousands of people have lost their family members and properties. Every one of you might felt very sad after reading/hearing about the extent of the damage done to people and properties. My interest is to know 1) What is explanation for this kind of suffering due to nature's fury as per our " sasthra " ? What about those thousands of young and old who got crushed and died? Can we compare these mass deaths to that of great wars of Mahabharatha/Ramayana? 2) Also is there any mention about earthquakes in any of our any of sanskrit/other literatures. I think there is some mention about some abnormal signs in nature whenever there was incident like birth of Ravana or Duryodhana but is there any specific mention about earthquake anywhere in olden literatures? 3) Don't we have any collective " do " s at this moment, apart from our individual sympathy/ contribution towards the victims? Do we have " shanthi mantra” that can be included in our sthothra parayana, for those suffering souls? (if it is permitted as per our sastra !!) These are just my thoughts and please suggest. Natural calamities of various kinds like floods, draught, Quakes, fires, have always been with humanity since time immemorial and are usually carried forward in historical stories in the form of myths. For instance, the stories of Indra " cutting " the wings of great mountains to ground them permanently on earth, and to prevent them from flying hither and thither destroying creatures beneath them (remember the Mainaka Parvatha incident from Ramayana) could well be one such - based on a bombardment of asteroids to the earth, a long while back. Mention of quakes is usually associated with calamitous events in human history. Stories of Hiranyaksha, Madhu and other daithyas taking the earth itself " away " etc could well be based on racial memories of large calamitous events. It is obvious that our rational thinking gets strained to incredulous limits when we see that Nature's events like these seem to destroy " mindlessly' the good and the bad, young and old and do not leave behind any thing, which permits some rationalisation in the form of a Law for Karma, sins, merit etc. There is beautiful story written by Arthur Clarke about the Biblical mention of a bright star over Bethlehem, when Jesus was born, being actually an event which was calamitous to the the living beings on a planet orbiting a Star like this. The one unmistakeable lesson that we get from al these is that the Universe (Read God) is unimaginably vast and great compared to the humans, and what we think is the power of the intellect triumphing over nature is a minor event in the cosmic scheme, presided over by the creator, just like a cross current of water flowing backwards locally in a devastating flood. Who can guage the cosmic purpose? > 2) Also is there any mention about earthquakes in any of our any of > sanskrit/other literatures. I do not think that Seetha disappearing in Mother earth, was a purely local earth quake which conveniently included her and left behind all onlookers. When we talk about beings with spiritual powers, there is no need to look for such extreme implausible rationalisations. We may possibly find some allegorical explanations or take it as it is. An event like the baby Bhima, who destroyed the Shathashringa mountain into a hundred pieces, when he fell on it accidentally should have really caused a major tremor - but one should not attempt to rationalise it into a miraculous survival of Bhima in a natural earthquake! All these events speak about souls with extraordinary powers demonstrating them in an indubitable manner. > > 3) Don't we have any collective " do " s at this moment, apart from our > individual sympathy/ contribution towards the victims? Our duties enjoined on us by the Shasthras are clear. We should all do our best to help minimise the suffering. Our prayers would be far more meaningful, if we really got down to some concrete action. Our adage " Sarve janah sukhino bhavanthu " exemplifies this basic tenet of our Shasthras.
