In this shloka, the author explains about the visit of shrI vaadhiraaja

thIrTha to Pandarapura. Let us look into the words " bhImaathata " ,

" vaajinam " , " iShtamEva " etc.

Before coming to pandarapura shrI vaadhiraaja thIrtha had obtained

special blessings of Lord hayavadhana. The incident goes like this. A

goldsmith was trying to make idol of Lord gaNapathi. When he took the

idol out of mould, it had turned into horse headed God instead of

elephant headed God. The goldsmith tried again and to his surprise he

got the same result. He tried several times in vain. He went on hitting

the statue with angry and threw that to he to the corner. That night in

the dream, he got the indication by Lord hayavadhana, to hand over the

statue to his devotee shrI vaadhiraaja who would be visiting that town

soon. The goldsmith repented for his action of hitting and throwing the

idol of God. As soon as shrI vaadhiraaja thIrTha approached the town,

goldsmith rushed to him and offered the idol of Lord hayavadhana. He

surrendered to shrI vadhiraaja thIrTha requesting for his blessings and

since that day onwards the whole goldsmith community became disciples

of shrI vaadhiraaja thIrTha.

shrI vaadhiraaja thIrtha used to offer special pooja to Lord

hayavadhana daily. After sometime, on his tour, shrI vaadhiraaja

thIrtha visited Pandarapura. Pandarapura, the abode of Lord viTala is

a famous pilgrimage place for all madhvas. It is on the bank of

bhimaarathi river, also called chandrabhaaga river. shrI vaadhiraaja

thIrTha worshipped Lord viTala with great devotion and stayed in that

place for sometime.

In pandarapura, shrI vaadhiraaja got indication that Lord hayavadhana

is running away from his sacred box containing the worshipping icons.

At the same time, on the other side, a farmer found that a white horse

is coming to his field and eating his Bengal gram (kadale) crops. With

great angry he chased the horse and found that horse entered into the

place where shrI vaadhiraaja thIrTha was camping. He complained to

shrI vaadhiraaja thIrTha about the damages done to his crop by the

horse and pleaded for compensations. shrI vaadhiraaja thIrTha who

understood that the horse is none other than Lord hayavadhana, asked

the farmer to search for the horse. Though the farmer could not find

the horse anywhere in that campus, he continued his arguments for

compensations. shrI vaadhiraaja thIrTha assured him that Lord

hayavadhana would surely grant him his demands and asked him to visit

his field next morning.

The next day, when he went to his field the farmer could see golden

Bengal grams wherever the horse has eaten. With great surprise, the

farmer realized the blessings of Lord and repented for his angry words

towards swamiji. He came running to shrI vaadhiraaja thIrTha requested

to forgive him for his angry words and offered the whole field to shrI

vaadhiraaja thIrTha. Through this the author indicates that Lord would

surely grant us whatever we ask for and so a real devotee should not

look for mundane worldly wealth.

Also shrI vaadhiraaja thIrTha learnt that Lord hayavadhana wants a

special dish called 'hayagrIva maddi', prepared out of the Bengal

gram. Next day after pooja, shrI vaadhiraaja thIrTha started praying

Lord hayavadhana with a special composition called 'dashavathara

sthuthi' with a golden plate full of 'hayagrIva' on his head, inviting

Lord to come and accept the dish. This composition is in 'Ashwa dati',

the rhythm of horse galloping. Lord hayavadhana, very much pleased with

the devotion of shrI vaadhiraaja, used to come in the form of a white

horse, put two legs on the shoulder of shrI vaadhiraaja and eat the

dish leaving behind a little as 'prasad'. shrI vaadhiraaja thIrTha used

to experience the presence of divine horse coming, dancing to the tune

of sthothra and eating the dish.

Now also this sthOthra is being chanted during pooja. A detailed

explanation of this sthOthra may be found in

You may listen to few verses of this sthOthra at

May such great guru shrI vaadhiraaja thIrTha who pleased Lord

hayavadhana with his deep devotion, bless all of us mangala.
