Dear Krishnabhakthas:

I would request & appreciate quick reply to the question. I am writing all the information what Srimad Acharya, pramanas has said & but I am quite confused what we should do tomorrow during Ekadashi. Thankyou.

Sadachara Vinodha book by Sri Vyasanakare Prabhanjanacharya

aruNodayakAle tu dashamI yadi dR^ishyate

(padmapurANam.h (brahma khanda a 15 shloka 32)

Even if there is a trace of Dashami at the time of arunodaya, that ekadashi is considered as viddha ekadashi . The destruction of dharma & all purushArthas is incurred by a fast on such a day.

kshaye vA.apyathavA vR^iddhau sampRapte vA dinakshaye

upoShyA dvAdashI puNyA pUrvaviddhAM parityajeth

(KrishnAmruthamaharnava Sloka 121)

When there is thithi kshaya, thithi vriddhi & dinakshaya (when Dasami, Ekadashi & Dwadashi fall on the same day) in all these three situations, a fast should not be undertaken on Ekadashi which is Dashami viddha. A fast should be observed on Dwadashi.

Characteristics of Arunodaya (Daybreak)

chatartro gaTikAH prAtararuNodaya uchyate

yatInAM snAnakAlo.ayaM gaMgAMbhaH sadR^ishaH smR^itiH

(KrishnAmruthamaharnava sloka 131)

Four ghatikas before sunrise is considered as arunodaya. The shastras say that this time is as holy as the waters of the Ganga for ascetics to have their bath. (It means that a bath during arundodaya gives as merit as a bath in the Ganga).

What is Gatika?

From HarikathAmruthasaara,

paramasUkShmavukShaNavayidhu thRuti karesuvadhu aivaththu

thruti lava veradu lavavu nimiSha nimiShagaLemtu mAthrayuga

gurudhashaprANArupaLa hanneradu bhANavu ghaLige

thrimshathi iruluhagaLaruvaththughatigaLahOrAthrigaLu || 23-56 ||

The smallest time unit is a moment;

5 kshana = Truti; 50 Truti = 1 lava; 2 lava = 1 minute; 8 minutes = a matra;

2 matra = a guru; 10 guru = prana; 6 prana = 1 pala; 60 pala = 1 Ghaika;

30 Gathikas = 1 day or night; 60 Ghathikas = a full day.

When Ekadashi is Dashami Viddha, a fast should be undertaken in Dwadashi.

(krishnAmruthamaharnava, Shloka 134)

When Ekadashi is Dashami viddha, a fast should be observed in Dwadashi & the fast broken parana on Thrayodashi. This brings prosperity for the country & progeny. One gets merit equal to the merit of performing hundreds of yajnas.

(KrishnAmruthamaharnava, sloka 120)

People should fast only on the day decided by persons well versed in Astrology. Otherwise the fast will lead to hell.

bahvAgamavirodhe tu brAhmaNeShu vivAdiShu

upoShyA dvAdashI puNyA pakshayorubhayorapi

(KrishnAmruthamaharnava Sloka 138)

If there are conflicting statements in the shastras regarding veda, when scholars express different opinions, it is meritorious to observe a fast on Dwadashi no matter which Ekadashi it is (either sukla or krishna paksha).

HARIVAASARA DURING DASHAMI & DWADASHI

ekAdashyAH prAMtabhAgo dvAdasyAH pUrva eva cha

brahmAhatvA surApAnaM steyaM gurvaganAgamaH

tasminstu bhunjataH pApAnyekasthAni bhavaMtyutaH

(vishnuthIrtha sanyAptapaddati)

The last part of (dasami viddha) Ekadashi & the first part of Dwadashi thithi is also known as Harivasara (Haridina). This period is also auspicious & merits for fasting. If any food is taken during this period, it amounts to killing of brahmin (brahma hathya) & others such sins (so if there is HArivasara on Dashami, food should be taken before Harivaasara begins & if there is Harivaasara on Dwadashi, the fast should be broken only after Harivasara is over.

QUESTION:

According to the timings, tomorrow morning 5:45 am only USA EDT devotees, the ekadashi thithi starts & dasami thithi ends. But our sunrise 6:15. According to Krishnamruthamaharnava, padmapurana as stated above, we should not fast during Dasami thithi. But the defination of HarvAsara says that first part of Dwadashi thithi & last part of dasami thithi, we have to fast . I assume that before 5:45 am during Dasami thithi tomorrow morning is the last part of Dasami & we should fast.

What I am confused is the shastras say that even a slightest trace of Dashami at the time of arunodaya, that ekadashi is considered as viddha ekadashi . And here HarivAsara meaning that we should fast the last part of Dasami thithi.

Pramanas & Srimad Acharya say that we should fast during Ekadashi because the moon is the presiding deity for "Anna" (food). As the lustre of the moon is dim due to the reasons given on the 2 days of Ekadashi the food that is eaten becomes harmful. The food that is eaten on Ekadashi remains undigested & turns toxic, giving rise to various diseases.

Moon's position in the earth is the same for everyone at every given moment & we look into sunrise for determining & to follow Ekadashi vrata or Dwadashi thithi which is different from place to place. Tomorrow night in USA is the Ekadashi moon.

If we have to follow Dasami thithi tomorrow because Dasami thithi does not end 1 1/2 hour before sun rise here in east coast, can we eat food after 6 am during Ekadashi thithi in east coast or we should follow the rules of HarivAsara.

Thanks & looking forward to a quick reply.

For NY coordinate:

Sunrise time at NY on 18th: 6:14 AM EDT

Dasami ending time: 5:49 AM EDT Wed. April 18th, puje, theertha prasada before 5:49am; (ekAdasi thithi begins 5:50am)

As per KrishnAmritha maharnava, thithi on Wednesday is Dasami (thithi that is 1.5 hrs before sunrise).

ekAdasi ending time: 8:00 AM EDT Thu., April 19th

Hence, thithi on Thursday is ekAdasi

dwAdasi ending time: 9:41 AM EDT on Friday, April 20th.

For SanFrancisco cocordinates:

Getting the thithi ending times from the software is tedious. So I just checked the thithi 1.5 hrs before the sunrise for SFO.

Sunrise: 6:30am (Pacific time),

April 17th, 5:00am, Dasami.

April 18th, 5:00am, Ekadashi

April 19th, 5:00 am, Dwadashi

So for, our friends at SFO, ekAdasi is a day earlier than East Coasters & fasting is much longer for east coast devotees!

This is just for your information.

Namaskara,

Thanks for bringing up this issue.

I need another clarification. Does this timings take into account the

'Day Light Saving' change? If not then, we need to look into that

also.

While surfing I came across site

http://www.bcca.org/misc/fasttime/srss.html

where Bahai people have developed a site for calculating sun rise and

sunset time world wide based on longitude and lattitude. They have

created this to find out their fasting time during their holy month.

There are some more info about fasting according to their scriptures.

Is it not hightime for us to think in this direction, to provide

globally accessible information, to find out exact timing/days for our

fasting dates or publish the predetermined time/dates for the use of

whole community worldwide. I am not good at astrology to decide how

thithi starts and ends. If any tools is available to find out or

determine, then I would be happy to take up this task of preparing

table or a calculator to find out fasting timings worldwide.

Any suggestions /help from any corner ???

With all the given information, it only indicates that tomorrow (Wednesday) is

not a

fasting day (atleast in NY area). So, the fasting is to be observed on

Thursday with

one meal on Wednesday(Dashami) and one meal on Friday(Dwadashi).
