Guest guest
Thanks. This website looks great. It says: " Shri Narashimha Sthuthi by Shri Trivikrama Panditha " . I think " Shri Narasimha Sthuthi " is composed by Sri Narayana Pandithacharya who is the son of Sri Trivikrma Pandithacharya. Can you confirm this please? Guest guest
Namaskara, Thanks for your appreciation. It is all by grace of Shri Hari. If I remember correctly the sthothra is by Shri Trivikram Pandithacharya. I remember hearing a story in one of the cassette where this sthothra was chanted by a sanskrit scholar. When Shri Trivikram Pandithacharya became disciple of Shri Acharya Madhva, his colleages became angry, and wanted to teach him a lesson. They took the help of a 'manthrika', to apply demonic forces on Trivikram Panditha. With that Trivikram Panditha started feeling burning in his body and it could not be controlled by any medicine. Then Trivikram Panditha prayed Lord Narashimha with this sthothra. I will try to get some more info on this. I would like to request scholars to confirm this. Guest guest
In response to my earlier question one of my friends privately mentioned to me that this is still an undertermined issue among the Madhwas. Regardless of who the author is it is a great gem for Madwas from the great Likucha family. I looked at a couple of books and this is what I have found: a) Sri Vyasanakere Prambhanjanacharya has listed it under the works of Sri Narayanapandithacharya in his Sumadwavijaya book. b)In the translation from Dr. G. V. Kulkarni (available online) although the title is mentioned as " Sri Narasimha Sthuthi by Narayana Pandithacharya) " , at the end of his English trnslation on page 24 he has written this paragraph: Trivikrama Panditacharya’s prayer poured grace in torrents on me I collected the water in small vessels of Kannada words I am giving this divine prayer of Lord Narasimha,I remain a small soul (Jeevi). However, on page 12, in the section called " Author's Words " he writes: " I wanted to revise Nrusimha stuti as I was told by Swamiji that the author of this strotra is Narayana Panditacharya, the author of “Sumadhva Vijaya”. Sri G. V. Kulkarni translates the last shloka (23) " Likuchathi Laka SunuH.. " as: The author is the son of a great father who belongs to Likucha clan wrote this immaculate Stuti, when chanted removes sins and destroys enemies Leads one to Lord Narahari’s loka and saves himfrom the whirlpool of passions. In the " Blessings Section " on page 5, Sri Vishwesha Thirtha swamiji writes: " Narayana Panditacharya here, describes the awfully beautiful form of Lord Narasimha. " Pandit Mahuli Vidyasimhacharya has put a footnote on page 10: " According to some scholars Narayana Panditacharya is the author " . In a section called " An appreciation " , on page Dr. BNK Sharma writes: In the first edition of his present work, Prof. Kulkarni has ascribed the authorship of the original to Trivikrama Panditacharya, a direct disciple of Acharya Madhva. However, in the Asirvachana of the Swamiji to the Revised Edition of this stotra, the Swamiji has ascribed the authorship of the stotra to Narayana Paditacharya, the third son of Trivikrama Pandita. The earlier tradition in the Pandit circles of the Madhva fold, so far as my knowledge goes, the work has been widely ascribed to Trivikrama himself evidently of the basis of a lingering tradition that after his historic conversion of faith from the Advaita fold to the fold of the Acharya after a protracted debate of 15 days the learned Trivikrama, the top most defender and champion of the Advaita school in those parts, along with all the members of his family, kith and kin was persecuted and harassed by some disgruntled elements of the other faith in various ways including the use of black magic. Trivikrama prayed to God Narasimha to nullify the effects. The refrain daha daha narasimha... is cited in support of this tradition. However, the reference to the author by himself raises a presumption in favour of Narayana Pandita’s authorship - the epithet Likuchatilaka understood to refer to Trivikrama himself while his son is referred to by the term sunu (Likuchatilaka Sunu). Those who hold that the author is Trivikrama himself and not his son, may have to understand the expression “Likuchatilaka” to be meant to refer to the great Subrahmanya Pandita ( Subrahmanyaake suriH..) as Trivikrama calls his father in his Vayustuti as the most outstanding scholar and member of the Likucha (Pejjattaya)Group of Shivalli Brahmins of South Kanara - and who has been discribed by Trivikrama himself in his Ushaharana Kavya as Likuchakulathilaka. As the son of such a great leader of the likucha vamsa, Trivikrama in his turn describes himself as Likuchatilaka Sunu. In other words. Subrahmanya Pandita was the first Likuchatilaka on this view according to Trivikrama’s acceptance Narayana Pandita was the youngest son of Trivikrama Pandita and by his time his father’s encounter with Acharya Madhva and its subsequent importance tended to regard Trivikrama Pandita himself as the Likuchakulatilaka as we now have it in the colophon to Narayana Pandita’s Madhva Vijaya.
