Dear HariBhaktas,

Here is a news article

printed in " THE HINDU " newspaper. Unfortunately, it's

not available on the net.

Treading a new path for society's good

Hubli, May 19th,

Sri Satyatma thirtha Swamiji of Uttaradi Mata, one of

the leading maths, founded by Sri Madhwacharya, the

propounder of

Dvaita philosophy, has embarked on " Dharma Parikrama " .

a programme to bring the devout back on the path of

dharma. The

programme involves the swamiji paying a visit on HIS

OWN to the houses of the devout every morning &

evening at the place

of his stay and advising them on the virtues of

following the dharmic path and how this will help them

in overcoming the stress

and strain of everday life.

He will also ask them to eschew bad habits such as

comsumption of gutkna, tobacco, liquour and other

vices, which not only

harm the interest of the family but also come in the

way of buliding a good society rooted in moral values.

He will make them

take a vow individually, and administer a collective

oath at the end of his discourse in public gatherings.

The Swamiji started the programme, which was unheard

of in the annals of the functioning of religious

heads, six months after

assumption of the peeta five years ago. He has lost

count of the number of families he has visited in

different places. It runs into

thousands, he says. He is now staying in Hubli for the

past one week.On average, he visits around 70 families

in two sessions,

one in the morning and another in the evening. At

times, the number of visits has crossed 100, and

sometimes the evening sesion

gets extended to late in the night.

The Swamiji distributes wall hangers containing the

commandments to people for adoption in day to day life

to help them

become worthy members of society. " I have been amazed

at the impacts my visits have caused " , the swamiji

said in a chat with

" THE Hindu " on Saturday. He said a number of people,

young and the old, and rich & the poor, had given up

their bad habits

after his sermons.

HE has a special place in the pantheon of the

swamijis who have ascended the peeta of the uttaradhi

mata. He is the youngest

of the swamijis to ascend the peetha, and the first

Brahmachari to do so after 400 years, after the

redoubtable, Sri Raghothama

thirtha (1557-1595), whose Brindavana is in Tirukoilur

in Tamil Nadu. Sri Ragothama thirtha was a

comtemporary of the

celebrated Sri Vadiraja Swamiji & Sri Vijayendra

Swamiji.

A product of the Satyadhana Gurukula, Mumbai, Sri

Satyatama Tirtha studied under Pandit Vidyasimhacharya

and was

ordained by the Late Sri Satya Pramoda Thirtha

Swamiji, five years ago at Tirukovilur.

He founded the Vishwa Madhwa Parishat, under which

several schemes for the welfare of members of the

community have

been launched. A school building is being constructed

in the earth-quake ravaged village of Kannaibi in

Gujarat at a cost of Rs

3.60 lakhs. The swamiji teaches a batch of students

who join the Uttaradi mata school for the last phase

of their education for

two to three years. The first batch of students has

already passed out and the second batch is being

guided by him.

The Swamiji's ardent wish is to start a centre for

giving guidance to the devout in each district

headquaters, in the next five to

ten years. Steps have been taken to appoint pandits in

some districts and their job is to visit interior

areas and render spiritual

advice to people.

The swamiji's decision to do away with the system of

" PADA POOJA " during his visits to houses. where a

fixed amount is

offered as " GURU Dakshine " has won him admiration from

the members of the community.

Under the new system started by him, anyone can take

part in the mass " pada poojas " whether one offers "

Guru Dakshine " or

not. By doing so, he has removed a barrier which

prevented the poor from paying their respects to the

religious head.
