24th Jan Friday SHASTYAAM

( ShraadhDha Thithi Sapthami )

i) Shree Naraharithirthara P.D.

3rd Pontiff in the Shree Rayar Mutt

(1324-1333-Hampi-Thungabhadra)

PooRvashram name Swami shaastri.

He was a scholar. Lead a life like rajaRshi instead of a sanyasi. He was

working as an officer in the court of King Gajapathi of Orissa(Kalinga)

State. Sriman Madhwar camped at Orissa during that time. They entered into a

debate. He accepted the Vaishnava-dvaitha Math and became his disciple.

Sriman madhwar asked him to get the Moola Seetharama idol from the Treasury

of that kingdom. G Venkoba Rao in his Indian Antiquary book says that he

lived in the kingdom of Gajapathy in 1263. Further he indicated it in the

Indian Antiquary, vol xliii (1914) page 264. After passing the

responsibility of the kingdom to the Yuvaraja, he takes the Moola seetharama

idols and hands over to Sriman Madhwar at Udipi. Acharya having worshipped

them for 80 days hands them over to Padmanabhathirtha and leaves for

Badarikaashram. Padmanabhathirtha ruled samsthana till 16th Nov 1324 and

hands over to Shree Naraharithirtha.

He composed many Devaranaamaas.

“Yenthu MaruLaadhe\Naa| Nenthu Marulaadhe” is the song in PanthuvaraaLi raga

set to AdhithaLa, first composed by him under the Ankitha Narahari-

Raghupathy..

Next composition was Hariye| Idhu sariye with ankitha Narahari.

His composition “Yedhuryaro Guruve Samanyaro” on Sri PraaNadevaru has

ankitha Narahari raghupathy containing 5 stanzas.

He has written commentaries to “ Yamaka Bharatha” and “Teekas” to

Dhashopanishat and Teekas to Sutra Bhashya.

Sri Narahari Tirtha

Thu, 07 Jan 1999 22:01:26 +0530

Friends,

On Saturday, the 9 th January (Pushya Bahula Sapthami) is the Punyadina of

Sri 108 Narahari Tirtha, a direct disciple of Acharya Madhva. The Vrindavana

of this great ascetic is also in Chakra Tirtha, Hampi, some distance from

Nava Vrindavana where 9other great Madhva saints have decided to stay after

casting off their mortal frames. The location is in the middle of the river

Thungabhadra, not easily accessible and cut off during floods. The

Vrindavana itself is located on a huge stone boulder and is not reached for

every day worship.

Sri Narahari Tirtha was one of the first converts of the young Purnaprajna

along with Sri Padmanabha Tirtha on the banks of the Godavari river, on his

way back from Badarikashrama. He was a many splendoured personality -

considered as a great statesman, warrior, ascetic and devotee all put

together. I think it would be appropriate to remember his life events in as

much as they are revealed to us in the mists of time.

There is a traditional sthothra called NarharIya Sthothra which gives a

rather a fanciful account of how Sri Narahari Tirtha became a regent of

Kalinga (modern Orissa). When the old king died, the ministers sent the

royal elephant with a garland to choose the next king, as the prince was

still a boy. The choice fell on Sri Narahari Tirtha, who had gone there on

the orders of Acharya Madhva to get the idols of Mula Rama (resting in the

treasury of the Kalinga kingdom). Sri Narahari ruled Kalinga for 12 years as

a regent and handed over the throne when the boy came of age. Except for a

brief while, when Sri Vyasaraja took over the throne of Vijayanagara,

perhaps Sri Narahari Tirtha would be the only Madhva ascetic who was

actually a king. Sri B N K Sharma in his History of the Dvaita school of

Vedanta however feels that the reality might well be that as his father had

also held high office, probably as a minister in the same kingdom, Sri

Narahari Tirtha became a powerful person who virtually ruled Kalinga, in the

normal political process, and not solely for the purpose of procuring the

idols, as the fanciful story seems to imply.

In any case, the position of authority occupied by Sri Narahari Tirtha in

Kalinga is well documented by as many as 9 inscriptions, including the

famous Sri Kurmam and Simhachalam temple inscriptions which have helped to

fix precisely the period of Acharya Madhva. These cover a period of 1264 -

1294 AD. The Sri Kurmam inscription is dated 1281 AD. Even the earliest

dated 1264 AD designates him as Sripada, indicating an earlier conversion of

Sri Shyama sastry (which was his name earlier). The Sri Kurmam inscription

also refers to his prowess as a Swordsman in getting rid of Sabaras and in

protecting the temple. The lineage of ascetics from Sri Purushotthama Tirtha

(Acchyutha Preksha of Sumadhva vijaya, the great Ananda Tirtha (Acharya

Madhva) and himself is clearly stated in the inscription itself. It is also

significant that Sri Narahari Tirtha had already ruled for an earlier

period, before this and went on making grants to temples ON HIS OWN for

another 13 years after the Sri Kurmam inscription in 1281 AD. The Mathsya

rulers of Oddavadi became independent of the Gangas and were converted into

Vaishnavas by him. He also converted many aristocratic and princely families

as madhvas, who till flourish in coastal Andhra and adjoining states.

15 works have been attributed to Sri Narahari Tirtha. None of them are

unfortunately printed and only 2 of them are available in manuscript form.

Out of the commentaries on Dasha Prakaranas of Acharya Madhva, 2 on

Vishnuthathva Nirnaya and Karma Nirnaya are quoted and criticised by Sri

JayaTirtha. They are not presently available. His commentary on Githabhashya

is also quoted with approval by Sri JayaTirtha. His Teeka on YamakaBharatha

of Acharya Madhva is available in Manuscript form in Mysore. Oriental

Library. Sri Narahari Tirtha is also believed to be the originator of the

so called Dasakoota and many Devaranamas are attributed to him. He used the

Ankitha of Narahari itself and used a language which must have been

prevalent in North Karnataka at the time. There is an excellent composition

with 15 stanzas called Thilako ninnolage neene, which is too long to be

included here. I am attempting to include the first and the last stanzas

along with a brief translation to convey the flavour of the language etc.

“Thilako ninnolage neene marule,

thilako ninnolage nee alako podayushya

kalako dushkarmavannu vishayadim

selako indriyangalannu svalparu

galisiko jnanvannu marule”

“Bharathakhandadolu bhusurajanma

sarvajnavarashasthrada adhikaravanu kalakolade

charamasaubhagyodbhava jnanadim

virakuthiya moolabhava padeyo nee

Narahariraghupathiya suprema padi marule”

SIMPLE TRANSLATION

Oh, deluded soul,

Ps understand within yourself. your life time is fast being eroded. Give up

evil actions, pull back your mind from sensory pleasures and try to get at

least some Jnana. You are born in Bharatha Khanda as a Brahmin. You have

the opportunity of studying the great Shasthra of Sarvajna (Acharya Madhva)

- do not lose it. For obtaining the ultimate Purushartha of Mukthi, you have

to secure Jnana and Vairagya. Get the grace and love of the Supreme Being,

in the form of Narahari Raghupathi.

I will try to post the meanings of the other stanzas gradually. Let us try

to realise, as Sri Narahari Tirtha has asked us to do, what we are losing,

if we neglect this most precious heritage.

“Acharyah PavanOsmAkam AcharyAnee cha BhArathI

DevO NArayanah srIshah dEvI mangala dEvathA”

AchAryAh srimadAcharyAh santhu mE Janmajanmani”

ii) Shree Gopaladasara P.D.(Uttanoor)

Born at Modalakallu in 1717. Chief disciple of Sri Vijayadasaru. Did Gayatri

Japa for two years. Spent time in telling fortune. By mere Darshan of Sri

Vijayadasa becomes Haridasa with the ankitha, “Gopaladasa”. Composed

thousands of Keerthanas, Suladhis etc., Donates 40 years of his life to Sri

Shreenivasacharya (Sri Jagannatha dasaru) on instruction from Sri

Vijayadasaru.

And shows the path to the dhaasa dheekashe.

KarNaSthwacham Shibhirmaamsam

Jeevam Jimoothavaahanah

DhaDhaidhadhi Chirasthini

NaaSthyadheyam Mahathamanaam !

KarNa gave his Kavacha to Indra

Shibi Chakravarthy gave his flesh to the Bird in order to save it.

Jimoothavaahan gave his body to garuda,

Dhadheecha gave his body to devathas for their weapon.

So There is nothing left to Mahathmas to donate.

Their motto is “ thyaaga”

KarNa- Shibhi- Jimoothvaahana- Dhadheecha belong to the Epic age.

In the 18th century, the person who was born to do such great “Dhaana” was

Sri Gopaladaasa.

Who is the “Kartha” for HithOpadEsha?

I have read in a book that it was Naarayana Panditha.

A pandit by name, ViShuNu Varma in his Hithopadesha describes:

“Dhanaasi Jeevithamchaiva paraarThe Praajna UsthrujEth”

It means that a Jnaani, for the sake of “ paropakaara”, dedicates all his

property , even his life for the sake of the needy. So also, for the sake of

“ Loka Kalyaana”, Sri Gopaladaasaru dedicates his 40 years of life to a

deserving Pundit (Srii Jagannatha daasa) to write Sri Harikathaamrutha

saraa, a magnum opus.

He thus became an “ aparokshajnaani as well as “Mahaathma”

He was affectionately called BhagaNna and noted for “ Bhakthi Maarga”

Shree Jagannatha dhaasa while expressing his gratitude to this great

Mahaathma , who donated his 40 yrs of life and condoning the sins committed

by him, says “Gopaaladhaasa raya Ninnaya Paadha Naa Pondhidheno Nischaya”

“Rathava Neridha Raghavendra,

Raaya SadguNa Saandhra,

Sathuva MaaRgadhali Samsevisuvarige

Athi Hithadhali Manorathava Koduva”

is the famous song in Mohana Raga composed by him sung by everybody on

Thursdays in his or her home

Spends his last days at Uttanur Venkatesha Devalaya and leaves this world as

a great “Aparokshagnani.”
