SRI RAGHAVENDRA SWAMYJI's ARAADHANA

(1578- 1671) (Mantraalaya)

Great men are born now and again in all parts of the world and in all walks

of life and when they depart they leave behind them a rich legacy for future

generations to enjoy. One such is Sri Raghavendra Thirtha, an avatar of

Prahlada and a saint of Sri Madhwachary's lineage.

Sri Raghavendra Thirtha's greatness is manifested by a number of superhuman

incidents. The Swamiji is very much present in the VRINDAVAN. Some fortunate

Bhaktas have seen him and many other devotees have seen him in their dreams.

Hundreds of swamiji's devotees can testify from their personal experiences

that the swamiji has kept his word ever since, even to this day and that his

devotees are amply rewarded according to their Bhakti and deservedness. He

was the second to enter Brindavanam alive. Sat in Yogasana and as per his

instructions it was covered on Virodhi samvatsara Shraavana shuddha bidige

at Manatralayam at the site on the banks of the river, the Thungabhadra,

which he selected to be the very same spot where Prahlada had performed a

yajna in his days. The stone covered was a piece on which Sri Rama was

believed to have rested during his sojourn in Dandakaaranya. His mahima in

the Brindavan would last for 700 years. Appanacharya's Raghavendra stotram

is sufficient to understand the mahimas of great Raghavendra. Thousands of

books on Him are available in various languages.

*Raghavendra Theertharu (1623-71)

Raghavendra Theertharu ranks as one of the most memorable saints of Madhwa

Calendar. He is classified as a major commentator of the works of Acharya

Madhwa. After Vijayeendra Theertharu, he is the most influential and

authoritative commentator and an exponent of the dvaita Vedantha. To this

day, his memory is cherished and loved with very deep devotion by the

followers of Madhwa, to which ever matha they belong to. According to the

Matha lists, Sri Sri Swamiji was on the Peeta from 1624 to 1671. His

predecessor was Sri sri Surendra Theertharu who was the contemporary of

Raghunatha Nayaka ( 1614-1633) of Tanjore. Sri Sri raghavendra swamiji was

himself a contemporary of the lastNayaks of Tanjore Vijayaraghava Nayaka (

1633-1673). Sri NarayaNa tells us in hisbiography that early in his life

before becoming a pontiff Sri Raghavendra ( then venkatanaatha) won the

admiration of the famous scholar YajnanaarayaNa Dikshith. His grandfather

was Kanakacalabhatta. His father Timmannacharya was also a great scholar and

an artistin music. Over forty works have been acribed to Sr Swamiji. Most

of these works were commentaries of the workls of AchaaryaMadhwa. Sri

jayatheertharu and Sri Vyaasarajaru, the three luminaries of the dvaita

Vedantha, The writings of Sri Swamiji explainlucidly the difficult work of

these three pi;lars of the dvaita philosophy. He has penned the

commentaries which include PramaaNa paddathi and VadavaLi of Sri

jayatheertharu, and a commentaory on Tarkatanadava of Sri Vysarayaru. The

purpose of making these works so simple clearly indicates his KaaruNya for

the common man. Let us remember this great YatigaLu on his 331st Aradhana

day which falls on 14th Aug and be blessed.
