Sahitya Parishat chief mobbed

Thursday January 22 2004 11:10 IST

BANGALORE: Kannada Sahitya Parishat president

Harikrishna Punaroor was on Wednesday roughed up and

stripped by some people, who called themselves as fans

of Kuvempu, at an awards function here for his

reported remarks on the State anthem.

When Punaroor was preparing to deliver a speech at the

Sahitya Parishat, a section of the audience shouted

slogans against him. As he began his speech, the group

climbed on to the stage and stripped him to his

shorts. When a shocked Punaroor moved towards the

side-wings, the mob followed him. They continued to

abuse him and finally gave back his panche before

storming out of the auditorium to damage his car.

Noted actress B. Saroja Devi recently concluded

Kannada Sahitya Sammelan chairman Kamala Hampana,

honorary secretary of Parishat Pundalika Halambi and

writer Dr Vijaya Subbaraj were present during the

incident.

Later, a clothed Punaroor continued his speech. ''Even

when I was trying to convince them that I never

humiliated Kuvempu and they behave like this, what can

I do,'' he asked. But he didn't file a police

complaint.

Kamala Hampana said: ''This is not tolerable. If there

was any difference of opinion, one could have

discussed it. It is a black day in the history of

Sahitya Parishat.''

Punaroor first pointed out that the Government had

shown disrespect to Madhwacharya by dropping his name

from the State anthem after the Cabinet cleared it. He

objected that the Government had used the poet's

original work and not the edited form that included

Madhwa's name.
