Guest guest
Namaskarams, I had asked this question a few months back. I am repeating it again since no one has answered yet. Why should one fast on Gokulastami? On the other celebrations like Rama Navami, Anatha Padmanabha Vratha, Vara maha Lakshmi vrata we do naivedya and take food. But we do not eat on Gokulastami day. Why is it so? And moreover why does one prepare chakkli, kodbele, rave unde etc for the festival and do not cook rice, huli etc?? --Sripathi Finance: Get your refund fast by filing online

Why is it so? The bharadhwAja samhithA says: sarvAsAm thu jayamthInAm shrEshtA krishnAshtamI matA yasmAth sannihithA athyamtham thathraivOpavasEnnaraH || sarvAsvapi jayamthIShu pUjA kAryA vishEShataH sAnidhya Eva karthavyaH upavAsO na dooragaH || Even though there is no difference (bheda) between Lord's avatharaas (Raama, Krishna, Narasimha..)Sri " Krisina Jayanthi " (not Krihna avathaara like others say)is more auspicious, it is because for us it is the nearest avathaara of the Lord. Therefore, the fasting applies only to that day. However, it is important to do special pooja's on the birthday of Lord's other avathaaras, fasting applies only to Krishnaashtami. Although Buddhaavathaara is truly closer to us, since that avathaara happened only for few minutes to distract asuraas, Krishnaavathara is considered as a full detailed avathara closer to us. Sri Sathyaparaayana Tirtha in his jayanthikalpa tIka expains the word sannihithA as " asmaakam kAlena samIpasthA , ithi " (The nearest avathaara of our time). Besides there are scores of pramanas from brahma vaivartha, bhavishyottara, vahni, skanda puraanas and smrithi on the benefits and sins of fasting and not fasting on Krsihnaashtami, respectively. (Please refer to Sri Prabhanjanacharya's kannada book " Sri Krishna jayanthi vratha " for these pramanas). For example, Brmahavaivartha says fasting on Janmashtami is equivalent of fasting 20 crores Ekadashis. Most important of all Srimad Achrya himself has indicated in his Jayanthi Nirnaya about fasting on this day. There are no pramanas to do fasting on other birthdays of the Lord. Apart from the above pramanas, I have heard from some people that it is only in Krishnaavathara the timing (such as mid-night, rohini star, ashtami) of the Lord's appearence is specifically stressed where as in other avathaaras only a day is mentioned or at the most like in Narasimha avathara approximate time (like dusk ) is mentioned. Before doing a puja it is prohibted to take any food every day. Therefore, on this day some people fast at least until the Arghya/Puja (according to Sri Sathyparaayana Thirtha's jayanthikalpa tIka , breaking the fast immediately after the argyha is indeed a grave sin), some at least until the sunraise (so that they can do naivedya to Vayu and Gurugalu, etc., for whom sunraise is necessary)and some until both Ashtami thithi and Rohini Star are crossed. > And moreover why does one prepare chakkli, kodbele, > rave unde etc for the festival and do not cook rice, > huli etc?? You must be from South India :-).. Krishna's birthday is usually associated with his baala leela and any food that is favorite to kids are cooked and offered as naivedya along with powa (avalakki, etc). These kids favorites depends on the sampradaaya and also on the geographical locations. I am not sure North Indians would do the same. For example, in Mathura they distribute lot of Kovas, Milk, Butter, sweets, etc. Rice, Huli, etc., are not done because they can not keep it until next day ( after 3 hours it is not consumable).
