SSG is made up of 2 sentences (there are two verbs). One is where the

shubha-karma samarpaNa is mentioned and the latter is where the

ashubha-karma-samarpaNa is specified.

A Kannada translation of SSG by Dr.A.V.Nagasampige has it as 7,

instead of 6 in all of above: saptasAmapratipAdya, saptakAlaniyAmaka

and saptamUrtyAtmaka (if I remember it right, the seventh one is

nArAyaNa). The stotra mAlikA of Dr.V.Prabhanjanchar has it same as the

above text. Which is correct?

Krishna,

How has Sri Nagasampige exlained it?

What does he say about kAla, sAma? And of course the mUrthIs are six

here. Has he added nArAyana in the translation or is it in the original? On 1/16/06, Krishna K <krishna.kadiri

saptasAma = hiMkAra, prastAva, udgItha, pratihAra, nidhana, Adi, upadrava

saptakAla and saptamUrtis:

before sUryodaya = pradyumna

after sUryodaya = vAsudeva

sangakAla = varAha

madhyAhnakAla (esp aparAhna) = nArAyaNa The nArAyaNa is there in the mUla.

aniruddha = for souls in garbhavAsa

sUryAsta samaya = Narasimha

post sUryAsta = Sankarshana

Sri AVN quotes Srimad Acharya's Chandogya Bhashya:

Namaskara,

The original posting has been cross-posted, and I

think it is not proper to respond to cross-postings.

Also, it may lead to some discussion re some of the

contents of the printed books which is being reproduced

here -- this may not be allowed by the VMS moderators.

Since KK has brought it up, here is my understanding.

I think there is a mix up of constituents of sAma [not

portions of sAmaveda]and varieties of sAma.

Just like any classical song has components so also

sAmagaana comes with seven components -- hiN^kAra,

prastAva, Adi, udgIta, pratihAra, upadrava and nidhana.

Also, sometimes, upAsana is done as paJNchamukha [leaving

out Adi and upadrava and the *specific rUpa-s* associated

with it].

Just like the many varieties/tunes of music set to note,

Saama comes in many flavors -- important ones are gAyatra,

rathantara, vAmadeva, virUpa, vairajya, shAkvari, revati,

bR^ihat.h, yaj~nAyaj~niya, rAjana, sarva etc. In everyone

of this, paJNcha mukha upAsana is done.

There is a *specific* rUpa for *specific* upAsana -- pls. check

the relevant upAsana section of the Chandogya bhAshhya.

Upasana rUpa-s:

hiN^kAra: pradyumna is meditated

prastAva: vasudeva

Adi: varAha

udgIta: nArAyaNa

pratihAra: aniruddha

upadrava: nR^isimha

nidhana: saN^karshaNa
