Meaning of the mantra: I take this with the permission of savitrdevata, from the hands of pusadevata lying on the shoulders of Asvini devatha. sUryadarshanam.h : OM udva_yaM sama'sa_spari_ jyoti_Shpashya'nta utta'ram.h | de_vaM de'va_trA sUrya_maga'nma jyoti'rutta_mam.h | (iti mantreNa sUryaM darshayitvA, lokanyAsaM kuryAt.h ) Holding the tread in the hands show it to the sun (if sun is not seen, as at dawn, show in the direction of sunrise (east) & do lokanyasa). dhAranaM: (wearing the thread): yaGYopavItamityasya mantrasya parabrahma R^iShiH | triShTup.h ChandaH | paramAtmA devatA | upavItadhAraNe viniyogaH | OM ya_GNo_pa_vI_taM pa'ra_maM pa_vi'traM pra_jApa'te_ryatsa'hajaM purastA't.h| A_yu_Shya'magryaM' prati'mu~ncha shu_bhraM ya'GNopavI_taM bala'mastu_ tejaH' | OM | (iti trivAramuktvA dhArayet.h | Achamya dashavAraM gAyatrIM japet.h ) Utter the mantra thrice & wear the thread. Do Acamana & then 10 Gayatri japa. Meaning: The sacred thread is great & very pure. It came to existence along with the birth of four faced Brahma & therefore is the oldest. May this thread, which is pure & derived from yajnanaamakaparamaatma, give us long life, strength & lustre. Wearing the sacred thread is quite essential for any religious performance. This fresh wearing is a must after birth & death pollusion is over. A bachelor wears one & a married person wears two. jIrNopavItavisarjanaM : Removal of the old thread upavItaM bhinnatantuM jIrNAM kashmaladUShitam.h | visR^ijAmi jale brahmavarcho dIrghAyurstu me || (iti mantreNa jIrnopavItaM visR^ijya Achamya) Uttering this mantra, remove the old thread (slide it down the chest, thighs & legs). Cut the knots in the sacred thread & throw it into the well.
