Prabhakara ShatryN. Raghunandana SharmaA BRIEF LIFE HISTORY OF SRI SUJAYEENDRA TEERTHA:During the reign of Sri Suyameeeendra Teertha, Sri RajaVenkataraghaveeendr a Acharya was the Divan of the Matha. He was alearned scholar who had been trained by renowned scholars like SriHuli HanumantachArya, Sri Ellatturu KrishnachArya, Sri DoddaballapuraVasudevachArya. In addition, he was a very able administrator who wasmanaging the Matha very efficiently. He was dedicated to theupliftment of the Matha and had earned the trust and respect of theswamiji through his excellent work. The Swamiji realized that he wouldbe the ideal successor to carry on the glorious tradition of the mathaand

accordingly gave him Ashrama on November 4th, 1963 with theAshramanAma of Sri Sujayeendra teertha. In 1967 Sri Sujayeendrateertha took over as the pontiff when Sri Suyameeeendra Teerthadeparted for the Lotus feet of the Lord.Even though the Vidyapeetha in Mantralaya had been around for a longtime, the credit for improving it and putting it on a strong footingshould go to Sri Sujayeendra teertha. He named it Sri GurusarvabhoumaVidyapeetha and set aside 20% of the fees charged by the Matha forvarious services for `tattva-prachara' (propagation of spiritualconcepts), to be used for the maintenance and upkeep of theVidyapeetha. This shows the extent of commitment that he had for thespread of knowledge. Today, the Vidyapeetha is internationallyrenowned and respected.Sri Susheeleeendra teertha started the practice of holding an annualreligious conference with discourses from renowned scholars. This isthe Sri

Sameera Samaya Samvardhini Sabha. The credit for invigoratingthis sabha and holding 2 conferences every year should go to SriSujayeendra teertha. This enhanced the process of spreading AcharyaMadhva's teachings, and also helped in fostering the scholarly community. As part of his emphasis on spreading knowledge, Sri Sujayeendrateertha also had learned scholars review many old and rare manuscriptsand had them reprinted, thereby enriching the world of literature. Hepersonally authored many works too; out of these, the one called`madhva matam' is the most well known. He is also known as the Architect of modern-day Mantralaya. Heestablished many guest houses, dinner halls, choultries, street lampsetc for the benefit of the millions pilgrims visiting Mantralaya. Healso established many branches and Vidyapeethas of the Matha all overIndia, enhancing its reach and appeal. He also made major changes inthe

administration of the Matha and provided jobs to hundreds ofpeople. So, in many ways he has left behind a glorious imprint of hisstint as the Pontiff. Adherents and followers of the Matha shouldremember him with gratitude for the wonderful service he has renderedthe Matha. One of his greatest gifts to posterity and humanity is the wonderfulsuccessor he has left behind in the form of His Holiness Sri SriSushameendra Teertha, a very great devotee of Rayaru. One can gaugethe extent of his devotion and his spiritual advancement through thefact that every one of his utterances are coming true by the grace ofRayaru. In 1986 Sri Sushameendra Teertha took over the administrationof the Matha after Sri Sujayeendra Teertha departed for the Lotus feetof the Lord. Sri Sushameendra Teertha had the good fortune of servinghis guru and predecessor for a year.suyamEeeendrakarAbj Ottham suvidyAbOdhakam sadA

|sumUlarAmapUjyADhya m Sujayeendragurum bhaje ||It is impossible to completely catalog and list the hundreds ofprogrammes and events that happen in Mantralaya every year. Yet, ifone were to attempt to compile the more popular ones, the entryheading the list would undoubtedly be the Aradhane of Rayaru, whichattracts millions of devotees from all over the world. Words cannot dojustice to the pomp and grandeur that this function brings. Anotherfunction that is observed with a lot of enthusiasm and grandeur is theAradhane of the current pontiff's Asharama-guru (the swamiji who gaveAshrama to the current pontiff). This is traditionally called `MAHASAMARADHANA' . The current article attempts to capture in words thededication and glory with which the Maha Samaradhana of SriSujayeendra Teertha, the Ashrama guru of the current pontiff SriSushameendra Teertha, is observed.Religious discourses by scholars are the

main attraction in anyAradhana celebration. This becomes even more relevant when the asceticwhose aradhane is being celebrated is a well known patron of knowledgeand education like Sri Sujayeendra Teertha. Scholars from reputedorganizations visit Mantralaya and deliver discourses on a variety oftopics, over a span of 7 days. On the day of the Aradhana (calledMadhyaradhana) , in the morning, icons of Acharya Madhva and all otherleading gurus of the Matha including Sri Sujayeendra Teertha are takenin a procession in the golden chariot of the Matha. Later, Panchamrutaabhishekha is performed to the Brindavana of Sri Sujayeendra Teertha. CULTURAL PROGRAMMES:Renowned artistes from all over the country are invited to Mantralayato display their talent.
