Guest guest
|| Shri Dig Vijaya Ramo Vijayete|| || Shri Moola Ramo Vijayete|| || Acharya Srimad Acharya Santo me Janma Janmani|| Hare Srinivasa, Pranama Shri Srinivasarao, Thank you for the article from Shri Boovarahamurthy. I clearly endorse the same view. I am currently in Singapore. There are many Madhwas here who are making sincere effort to learn much about our philosophy and grantas supporting them. Many of them are here for the past decade or more. There has been a view similar to that of Shri Pradyumna avare, that we cannot bring saligrama across the seas. Today in Singapore, we are conducting many functions, celebrating the Aradhane of Mahagyanis, Daasarus and Janmastamis. This is done in the traditional method as followed by our Sampradaya. Many hold the view of not taking the saligrama beyond the borders of India on the ground that it has been advised by our ancestors. With much respect to our noble ancestors, I held the view that this is applicable only if there is no method of performing the puja of the saligrama as per our customs. This includes adhering to strict madi in the house. If one is able to follow the acharas & madi as prescribed, I am sure that, there is no reason for you to perform the saligrama pooja outside India. Further, it’s true that the compulsory gurukula has been diminishing over the few decades. It’s not totally erased, just diminishing. Our swamijis have also stated that, one shouldn’t give the excuse of not attending the gurukula for not learning the acharya’s siddhanta. One should take the effort to learn them, the Guru shall be sent automatically in the right time to ratify your act and also bestow the correct knowledge. I recommend people that they should make effort to learn new granthas and when they find the time available. For Guru’s ashirvada, you can start by first having our Hari Vayu Gurugalu’s image in front of you and in your mind, and start with Shri Gurubyo Namah. At the completion of the learning, submit the entire effort and knowledge at the feet of your Guru. At the right time, a learned scholar, comes and ratifies your act and helps you get the Madhava’s grace. One must not give an excuse for not learning our Shastra. That is my faith and objective. This view may not be shared by our learned scholars here, I sincerely apologise for any errors or hurting any sentiments. Elders are requested to correct if there are mistakes. I fully understand that the views expressed by him are out of his extreme reverence for the Sutras, it's author and commentators. The very first Sutra prescribes the eligibility to do Brahma Jignasa. It says, among other things, that enquiry into the Brahman (Sri Vishnu), should be done after acquring the requisite qualification. This would mean studying vedas and sastras in the traditional Gurukula style under a Guru and acquiring a good knowledge of Vedas(including Upanishads,) Puranas, Ithihasas etc If this view has to be acceped in toto under the present circustances, most of us who have a job-oriented education and very little initiation to sastra cannot dream of knowing anything about the greatness of Brahama Sutras and the glorious Bashya by our Great Sri Madhwacharya on the Sutras. Sri Narayana Pandithacharya, author of Sumadhwavijaya in Sarga xi (sloka 79) says that eligible souls ranging from human to the divine who repeatedly recite, contemplate and exhort, according to their inherent ability, on the meaning and purport of the Bashya by the great Sri Anandatitha, gain eternal salvation with the Grace of Lord Mukunda.Should we miss the bus turning our eyes and mind away from Sutras etc.? Mr.Thippa Srini had done a good service in broadly introducing the Sutras by clarifying that the composer is none other than Lord Narayana, the overall arrangement of topics, who all have written commenteries on it, that our Acharya himself has written 4 works on it etc. This would create a curiosity among bakthas to know more about them especially as to why 4 granthas have been written on a particular work etc.etc. I wonder how many of us will qualify to know anything about Brahma Sutras or Sumadhvijaya or Hari VayuSthuthi(which is an equally " Madi " Grantha) if we go strictly by tradition...Our Parampara as well as many Swamijees have also advised us to get up before Arunodhaya, do snana (before bed coffee), do thrikala sandhya vandana, do Devara Pooja,do Ekadasi and Krishna Janmashtami Upavasa, do Chathurmasya Vratha etc. Except for fortunate and venerable few, how many of us are able to follow the above ? Why drag parampara or swamijees for obstaing from doing something which every Maadhwa should do? Most of us are no longer in that Gurukula era and that should not preclude us from knowing atleast something about our great Madhwa Matha(where we are fortunate to have been born), its illustrious founder and the glorious saints and haridasas in that tradition.Brhama Sutra Bashya and Mahabaratha Tatparnirany! a , the two great works of our Acharya is credited to be as important to all Maadhwa men as mangalasutra to women.Though we may not be successful in grasping their meanings and greatness in full, we can make an attempt to atleast to know something of what they are about . Accredited scholors are there in all big and small cities to gladly help and guide us. Lot of information on Madhva sastra is on the web.To give a couple of examples:www.tatvavada.org carries under " vedic literature " , an article in English on Brhama Sutras by Dr.V.R.Panchamukhi. Another wonderful site www.vysamadhwa.org has a lengthy question and answer audio recording under Upanyasamalika-miscellaneous section. An E Book on Sumdhwa Vijaya including a forward by Prof.D.Prahaladacharya is available in www.dvaita.org.The list is really endless - only we should have the time and required effort.Plenty of books in Kannada, Tamil and other languages are there. In English too there are books ranging from Bashya for Beginners comprising of a few pages to three volume treatise by Dr.B.N.K.Sharma on Brahmasutra Bashya. The sole object of this letter is to express my feeling that we should not shut our eyes and mind to such holy works on the pretext of tradition. We must read them with devotion and this will slowly elevate us to higher levels and inculcate a desire in us learn more and more literary achievements like Nyaya Sudha, Parimala etc. I have also heard from parampara that when we read a grantha like Hari Vayau Sthuthi, in a parayana style we have to be on fasting and with traditional attire etc. wheras if we are reading it for the purpose of memorising (getting it by heart), it can be done even after our lunch or in the evening but in a proper attire. Above all, there is something beyond all the dos and donots.(as dictated by our parampa!).Our Great Acharya has quoted a verse(no.29) in his work Sadachara Smriti which emphasises that Paramatma Sri Vishnu should always be remembered and that He should not be forgotten even for a second. All the injunctions and prohibitions are only servants of this cardinal rule - that is to say they are only subject to this.If we are hesitant to discuss such sastra vicharas in this august forum what else are we going to discuss? only Loukika matters for the good of the Maadhwa community like matrimonials, job opportunities, house rentals etc.? We should have both. So,may all of us study Brhama Sutra and similar sastras as a Pooja to Sri Hari and offer them at t! he feet of Barathiramana Mukhyapranatargata Sri Vedavyasa Deavaru.
