Guest guest
Moderator's note: Please start any discusssion about this topic in vms-philosophy group. Thanks, On Behalf Of bharatishballal Thursday, March 15, 2007 12:02 AM A reputed leader of our community has expressed his concern over the difficulties faced by young purohits and cooks of our community in getting married. These days even rurally based shivalli brahmin girls want alliances from software engineers, doctors ,MBAs CAs etc. They are ready to marry even a person just drawing below four-figure salary but having so-called white-collar job. They don't want to marry Purohits, Cooks , who are bases of our community and these days have earnings equal to and some times more than that of suit-clad yuppies. If this trend continues in our community there may not be any purohits or cooks in the days to come. Or the purohits or cooks may have to marry brahmin girls from other communities or even inter-caste marriages(this happened in 19th century when our people went to Kerala and became Nambudiris) Is it a symptom of degradation of the community? Is there a solution to check this trend? The leader who told me this says he has an answer. He says that our Community leaders , temples, institutions should see that poor, destitute female children of our community should be brought up in Gurukulas run solely for female children . Our traditional values should be taught to them in childhood itself so that there would be less attraction to lead a cosmopolitan-life. These children when grown up can get married to boys who take up Paurohitya or Cooking as thier Profession.
