Guest guest
MT/10/MM1/250607 Madhwa's Teachings. My Master by M.R.Gopalacharya-a tribute to Shri. Satyadhyanteertha Swamiji. The Uttaradi Math of great antiquity has a long tradition of high priests blessed with profound scholarship and yogic powers. Some of them born for higher purposes have, like Shrimat Anandteertha Bhagavatpadacharya, the reviver of the Math, left everlasting footprints on the sands of time. Shri. Satyadhyanteertha Swamiji was one of them. Shri. Satyadhyanteertha Swamiji, the High Priest from 1912to 1943 was a colossus of intelligence. He was an authority on all schools of thought; Vedic and non-Vedic and other worldly subjects and dominated the contemporary philosophical scene in the country. He was compassionate: his compassion was not confined only to human beings but it was extended to cover the entire life form. He was generous: his generosity far exceeded the expectation of the receiver. The Swamiji had the intellect of platinum, heart of gold and hands of silver, as a scholar put it. He was an enlightened man. He was a yogi, who had, among other things, conquered his senses, He slept just for 2/3 hrs a day and devoted most of his remaining time to spread Maadhwa philosophy through out the country. His contribution to the enrichment and spread of Maadhwa philosophy was truly immense. Needless to say, it requires a man of exceptional intelligence and profound knowledge of philosophy to assess His Holiness' contribution to the cause of Maadhwa philosophy and as most of the scholars agree, there could be no better person than Pandit M R Gopalacharya who had the privilege to study under His Holiness and to be closely associated with him for a considerable period, to under take the work. Pandit Gopalacharya has paid rich tributes to Shri Satyadhyanteerth Swamiji in his booklet " My Master " which gives glimpses of multifaceted sage, Shri Satyadhyanteerth. " Madhwa's Teachings " has decided to e-mail " My Master " in installments for the benefit of its readers and accordingly dispatches the first instalment, which is appended below. With Best Regards, Ramchandra Tammannacharya Gutti. My Master (His Holiness Jagadguru Shri.Satyadhyantirtha) (Majorum Gloria posteris lumen est---Ancestral glory is a lamp to prosperity. - Sallust. ) India has been passing through the throes of a new birth. The last several decades of our nation's history have been a period of strain and stress, of toil and turmoil, of a ferment of far reaching consequences in our social, political, intellectual and spiritual life. The old forms are crumbling away under the pressure of the new environment and the new is still powerless to be born. The erstwhile barriers are breaking down. It is very difficult to predict what will emerge from this explosive situation. All are breathlessly waiting to see if the nebulae condense themselves to a star, if chaos boils down to order, if there would be any creative efforts and fruitful achievements. The air is thick with fantastic plans, gigantic projects and shadow visions of the future. Indeed there is an upsurge of new vigourous life in all directions, but it cannot be denied that there is so much of distress and dreadful poverty everywhere. People suffer from harrowing doubts, black designs, blind hope and unreasoning despair; a feeling of in tense uneasiness broods over the land and there is a cry of anguish everywhere. The whole country is in a frightfully transitional state. In the modern world detached from the distant past there is an air of dogged self-complacency. The belief prevails that during the last twenty centuries the world has taken great strides towards the fulfillment of the destiny of the human race. Man has conquered the elements and sails through water with ease and flies incredible material prosperity, however. Looms a similar apparition of terror – the shadow of desolation and extinction. At man's elbow stands the Temper whispering into his ears and urging to invent infernal machines for the global destruction. I am sure that the study of the life and philosophy of great saints like His Holiness Sri Satyadhyana Tirtha would show a way out of the woods to green gardens. His philosophy enshrines ways and means of individual regeneration, which may go a long way towards bringing about the resurgence of spiritual values and the sound reconstruction of society.
