Kakolu Kshetra The Hassle-free way to a Divine Experience Exorbitant sees, serpentine queues ... security guards poking and shooing you away ... these are the things you rather ‘miss’ at Kakolu Sri Venugopala Krishna Temple. It’s all peace, sprowling serenity and nature’s bounty that greets you at the temple, devoid of those commercial aspects you find

unsettling in famous temples else where. Take a 30 kms. drive to Bangalore North on Yelahanka-Doddaballapur Road. Take left in Rajanakunte. You reach Kakolu, that’s just 4 miles away. A place that boasts of all the trappings of modernity sans the nurly-burly of city life. At its heart is the Venugopalakrishna Temple, surrounded by some divine idols. When Kakasura, a rakshas attacked Sita, Rama killed him with grass itself as a weapon, according to Ramayan. He was actually seized by Jayant the son of Indra. To atone his sins, Kakasura dipped in a pond (kola). Hence the name Ka-kolu!. The statue of Venugopalakrishna is chaturbhuja (having four biceps), placed snugly in a garden. At first, visitors are confronted by Anjaneya in a pillar. Garuda is at the back, flanked by Shankha Chakras. Legend has it that Sri Vyasaraja on his visit to Kakolu, installed this and prayed that all the wishes of those who pay obeisance to the God here, might be fulfilled. The Story of Venugopalakrishna dates back to history. Sri Sri Padaraja had installed Venugopalakrishna at Chikkadapura on the west bank of Arkavati. When a dam was built across Arkavati, habitats on its banks got submerged and the people migrated to other parts. Deep in river water, Venugopalakrishna was hardly visible then. Before 1900, Kakolu belonged to the present days’ Hesaragatta farm. It is learnt that Kakolu belonged to the local Cheluru Chawadi and was being ruled by a Samant (provincial chiefain) of Vijayanagara dynasty. Following a divine inspiration, Narasanna and his brother Seshagiri Rao, who were the Shanubhogs of Kakolu (of Shashtik lineage and Harithasa Gothra) took the ruler’s permission and marched towards Kakolu. After widening the Anjaneya temple premise they conducted the installation ceremony on Jyesta Shuddha Panchami day (01-06-1930) in Pramada Nama Samvatsara. Crowned and clad in ‘Pitambara’, the Venugopalakrishna statue is life-sized and made to look like Krishna playing his venu (flute), standing cross-legged in a ‘Brindavan (garden)’. He is flanked by cattle apparently mesmerised by his ‘Venugaana’. The sight of this unique Brindavan is a feast to your eyes

indeed. Sri Vidyapayonidhi Theertha Sripada, the erstwhile head of Sri Sosale Vyasaraja Mata, conducted the Astabandha Pratistana of Magnificent statue of Chaturbhuja Sri Krishna in 1993 in true tradition. Idols of Vedavyasa, the Brahma of Brahmasutra, Madhvacharya the founder of Dvaitha Philosophy, Sripadaraja the hard-core disciple of Rangavittala, all have been installed facing Sri Krishna. Idols of Kanakadasa and Purandaradasa guard the main entrance. As you move clockwise, you find Garudagamba, Balipada, Yagashaale, Paakashaale ... a small dining hall in the back, ideal for speeches,

homas and small get-togethers. Next to them are the Naga Mantapa and the shrine of Dakshineshwara (Rudra Deva). Kakolu Kshetra is the only temple where the Acharya trio (Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhva) are found together. Their messages along with brief descriptions of their works displayed here prove quite useful and enlightening to the visitors. Brahma Rathotsava is celebrated at Kakolu Temple every year in a very grand scale and spectacular way, beginning from the Tritiya

of Chaitramasa till Rama Navami. On Chaitra shuddha tritiya (8-4-2008), after flag hoisting,Ashwavahanotsava, Chaturti(9-4-2008) Gajendra Moksha lecture by Dr.N.VENKATESHACHARYA will be held followed by MahaKalyanotsava Discourse by Dr.H.SATYANARAYANACHARYA and NRTIYAMRUTA CULTURAL PROGRAMME on Panchami,(10-4-2008) Shri Krishna goes circling (Pradakshina) around the village, aboard a Sheshavahana, flanked by Rukmini and Satyabhama. In Abhijit Muhurtham in the afternoon, Brahma Rathotsava takes place. Evening ,prize distubution for the winners of quiz on HARIDASA SAHITYA CHIEF GUEST DR.MAHESH JOSHI ,SR.DIRECTOR BANGALORE DOORDARSHAN ,PRESIDED BY EMINENT DASASAHITYA SCHOLAR DR ANANTHA PADMANABHA RAO , Next day, that’s on Shashti,(11-4-2008) it is Vasantotsava (Avabhruta Snaana). Subsequent to that during lowering of the flag, it is believed that if issueless couple savour Garudabutti, they are blessed with the progeny. Hence the diety is also called Santana Venugopalakrishna. It is also believed that a 'thottilu seve' offered to the diety will bless the couple with the chance to swing a cradle with a baby in it. This is to commemorate the installation of core idols (moola vigraha) on the momentous occasion of the temple’s Platinum Jubilee year, a series of discourses on theosophy, religion and art titled ‘Sri Krishna Darshana’ will be held throught the year.VALEDICTORY CEREMONY WILL BE HELD IN THE DIVINE PRESENCE OF THE PONTIFFS OF SRI RAGHAVENDRA SWAMY MUTT ,MANTRALAYA SRI SRI SUSHAMEENDRA TEERTHA SRIPADARU AND SRI SRI SUYATEENDRA TEERTHA SREEPADARU

CHIEF GUEST JUSTICE M.N.VENKATACHALAIH RETD.CHIEF JUSTICE ,SUPREME COURT OF INDIA That's not all. The people behind Kakolu Temple have faith in social service also as a means to serve the God. Hence 'Arogyamruta' a free-eye camp was conducted by the temple 'Udayabhanu Kalasangha' mostly for the senior citizens from rural areas in which Bhagavan Mahaveer Jain Netralaya conducted the free eye-tests. An industrial entrepreunership workshop for the unemployed educated youth was also for one day headed by the Deputy Director, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Industries, Govt. of India. A trust is in charge of the temple's maintenance. Special pujas, utsavs on festivals and on special occasions, in addition to the daily pujas are conducted under the guidance of the same trust. Kakolu is also home to good old Kshetrapalaka Veerabhadra Swamy Temple, Grama Devatha Benki Maramma and Bhakti (Beera) Lingeshwara once worshipped by Kanakadasa himself. Like a pearl in a shell that is being opened slowly, Kakolu Temple has been drawing devotees gradually. Once visited you are bound to be a regular here.
