SRI SRI SREENIVASA KALYANAM Book Review by Mohan Chippagiri Here is a book on SRI SRI SREENIVASA KALYANAM in Kannada translated by Dr. Vidwan Chaturvedi Vedavysa Charya. Three eminent Madhwa maths swamiji’s have blessed the author with their anugraha sandeshas The great Madhwa swamijis are Sri Sri Vishvesha thirtharu of Sri Pejawara math, Sri Sri Sathyatma Teertha Swamji of Sri Uttaradimath and Sri Sri Vignyananidhi

thirtharu of Sri Sripadarajarumath. In the author note, the author beautifully explains the significance of the abode of Srinivasa. The word Mountain means Sri Venkateshwara Mountain, Lord means Sri Venkateshwara, Gurugalu means Sri Madhwacharya, Tirtha means Sri Swami Pushkarani. Sreenivasa mountain is the Kaliyuga Vaikunta so, Sri Sreenivasa is the Vaikunta Adipathi(KALAU VENKATA NAYAKAHA) The author has given the

meaning of VENKATADRI. He has explained about the Moola Virat and he has also explained about Garbha Gudi and has clearly described Devasthana puje and Brahmotsavam. He also explained about different Vahanas(vehicles) used in the Brahmotsavam. Chakra Snana (Bath). At the end of the Brahmastova day the Sudarshana will be immersed in the swami pushkarani. All the pilgrims will take holy dip in the Pushkarani. This

type of holy dip occurs on four special days in a year. The special days are last day of Brahmastova, Rathasapthami, Vaikunta Dwadasi and Anantha chathurthi. The author explains about chatur Moorthis like bhooga Sreenivasa, Ugra Sreenivasamoorthy ,Dharbar sreenivasa Moorthy and Utsava moorthy. He has explained various sevas offered to Lord Sreenivasa and also he has given the list of ornaments to the lord sreenivasa . The author dealt nearly 145 pages about Thirumala

rituals. This book contain 12 Chapters. Translation of Shlokas is very lucid and average kannada reader will be able to understand the meaning of the shlokas. One would feel that he is in Vaikuntha while reading the great shlokas. He would for a moment forget that he is living on this earth. In the Second Chapter the authors deals with the entire description of the Sri Sheshaparvatha. The author has given meanings for the difficult words. Kshetrapala of the Tirumala is the Lord Rudra devaru. The author has vividly described him in this book. Next many Vaishnavas have a doubt whether to eat prasadam which is offered in Tirumala. Dr Achar explained about this in six slokas Prasadam should be taken on all the days and it should be avoided on the Ekadasi day. In Chapter III the author brings home the importance of the avatara of Sreenivasa and in the IV Chapter the author gives a detailed description of the parvathas and Cholaraja shapa vimochanam In this when lord sreenivasa met with an head injury he calls Sri Bruhaspathi who is the guru for the Indra and asks him to cure his head injury. The dialogue between Bruhaspathi and sreenivasa are excellent. In chapter V there is a small story about why Lakshmi Devi left for Kollapur and reasons behind the birth of Vakula devi and importance of Papanasanam and Swami Pushkarani. In Chapter VI the author narrates the story of the birth of the Padmavathi Devi and also birth of a son to Akasha raja. Vayu Devaru tells the importance of Padmavathi devi to

the Akasha raja. Narada munigalu guides Padmavathi Devi. He clearly says that Vaikunta Murthy none other than Lord Vishnu will be your husband In Chapter VII is the turning point and important for the Sreenivasa kalyanam here in this chapter Lord Sreenivasa and Padmavathi devi meet each other and Sreenivasa tries to convince Padmavathi Devi that she should marry him but padmavathi devi asks

his Gotra and Nakshatra. Sreenivasa tells Vaistha as a gotra and Sravanam as his Nakshatra After listening every thing Padmavathi says to him that she will not go against her parents wish will only marry according to their wish. In Chapter VIII there is a talk between Vakula devi and Lord Sreenivasa. Lord Sreenivasa requests Vakula devi that he wants to marry Padmavathi devi and also he explains the reason for marrying her. This chapter is very interesting to read and contains detailed story about the Vedavathi Devi and her importance. Another highlight of the book is the discussion between Lakshmi devi and Sreenivasa. Srinivasa tells lakshmi Devi that her wish is fulfilled that he is going to marry Padamavathi devi soon. After hearing words of Sreenivasa Lakshmi devi

feels happy and gives her consent to the marriage In Chapter IX and Chapter X there is a narration about the invitations to all Devathas and the description of marriage celebrations. In chapter XI The detailed discussion between Padmavathi devi and her mother throws light on the dharma of a bride. This is definitely a good lesson to the present young generation. In the dialogue, the mother teaches the daughter how she should behave in her in-laws house and also with her husband. The wordings here are interesting and commendable. To sum up, the book has come out very well with attractive cover. Everyone should read this book on this auspicious Vaisaka Masa on the Shukla Dasami day – the day on which Srinivasa tied the knot to the Sri Padmavathi devi.
