Dear Reader,

The nineteenth century, the second half in particular, is reckoned as

a remarkable period in Indian history for it witnessed the birth of a

galaxy of great personalities in the sub-continent. These

extraordinary men left no area of human activity in the country

untouched, be it Freedom Movement, Politics, Philosophy, Science,

Literature, Religion, Social Sciences, even Sports. They were the men

with lofty ideals and high moral values and, therefore, were accepted

by the masses as their leaders. Therefore, to say that their

contribution influenced the entire country, at the time, would not be

an exaggeration.

Pursuing their ideals with commitment and dedication, these men

marched into the twentieth century and left a lasting impression on

the Indian psyche. Shri. Satyadhyana Teertha Swamiji, Pontiff,

Uttaradi Mutt was a philosopher, who walked tall among the great

thinkers of the time.

Like a meteor, said a scholar, he flashed across the sky and left a

blazing trail, which continues to illuminate the star-lit dark sky,

even after he completed the natural years of his existence sixty five

years ago.

The single pointed purpose of his life was to spread Maadhwa

philosophy and place it on a high pedestal and he lived every moment

of his life for the purpose. His contribution to the cause of Maadhwa

philosophy was phenomenal. There was no paatha or discourse in any

Maadhwa institution in the country, where he was not quoted and it is

continued even to-day. He was often referred to in philosophical

discussions held among his contemporaries belonging to different

schools of thought. It requires a far superior intelligence and

analytical mind to assess what the Swamiji was, said a sage-like

person some years ago.

On the occasion of the centenary year celebrations of the Swamiji,

in the year 1971, Shri. M.R.Gopalacharya, one of the greatest scholars

of our time, wrote an article on him- " Sri Satyadhyana Teertha-Our

Saviour " , which the writer liked very much for its contents and

presentation. He desires to share it with the readers of Madhwa's

Teachings. The article being a lengthy one, he prefers to mail it, in

instalments, as usual.

Accordingly, he sends herewith the first instalment of the article,

which, he hopes, the readers will like.

With regards,

Ramchandra.Tammannacharya.Gutti.
