There was lot of confusion for mAdhwas living in USA in the time zones EDT or CDT. After lot of consultation from scholors in India the conclusion is

All thithis prevailing during Sunrise (not arunodaya kala) is the thithi for the day except on Ekadashi. The pramanas are given below. Thanks to ShrI Ramachandran from Detroit.

ShrI Ramachandran from Detroit consulted few scholors which includes panchanga karta in India, all of them unanimously said there is no double ekadashi or no Shravana dwadashi upavasa for USA. Because, Ekadashi thithi, Dwadashi thithi & Shravana nakshtra ends before Sunrise (after arunodaya kala for EDT, CDT & before arunodaya kala in case of MDT & PDT)

ShrI Ramachandran also asked for pramana for which the panchanga karta had advised him to read Sri Krishnaarmrutha maharnava & also told the verse numbers.

ekAdashyA yadA brahman.h dinaxayatithirbhavet.h | uposhhyA dvAdashI puNyA trayodashyAM tu pAraNam.h || 127 ||

If on Ekadashi, there is 'dinakshaya' fast should not be observed on this day. Fast should be observed on the next day i.e. dwadashi & pArane should be done on tryodashi.

pratipratprabhR^itayaH sarvA udayAdudayAdraveH | saMpUrNA iti vij~neyA harivAsaravarjitAH || 128 ||

If the first day (of the fortnight) i.e. padya & all other thithis except ekadashi are present from sunrise to sunrise, such days are called 'sampurna thithi'.

If from one sunrise to the next, all of it is one date; such a `hari-vAsara' ( " Vishnu's day " -- ekAdashI) is to be known as complete, and flawless. At that, one may say: but what if there is some conflict of dates at the very time of sunrise, but none later? aruNodayakAle tu dashamI yadi dR^ishyate | pApamUlaM tadA j~neyamekAdashyupavAsinAm.h || 129 ||

On the day of ekadashi, if there is a trace of dashami & if a fast is undertaken, then the fast gives rise to sin.

aruNodayakAle tu dashamI yadi dR^ishyate | natatraikAdashI kAryA dharmakAmArthanAshinI || 130 ||

If dashami thithi is found at the time of arunodaya, ekadashi should not be observed on that day. If observed, it destroys dharma, artha & kama.

chatusro ghaTikAH prAtararuNodaya uchyate | yatInAM snAnakAlo.ayaM gaN^gAbhaH sadR^ishaM smR^itaH || 131 ||

Four ghatikas (one ghatika is equal to 24 minutes) before sunrise is sunrise is known as arunodaya. This is the first for ascetics to bathe. This time is sacred like the waters of Ganga.

udayAtprAg.hyadA viprA muhUrtadvayasaMyutA | saMpUrNaikAdashI nAma tatraivopavased.hgR^ihI || 132 ||

O brahmin! If ekadashi is present for four ghatikas before sunrise that is known as 'sampUrna ekadashi' & fasting should be done on this day. If [an ekAdashI] extends from a duration of two muhUrta-s (twice

48 minutes, or 96 minutes, as before) in the morning (i.e., before sunrise; then it is called a `saMpUrNa-ekAdashI' ( " total " ekAdashI) and only on such a one must a householder fast.If an ekAdashI is unobstructed for a period of 96 minutes before

If ekadashi is present for three ghatikas before sunrise, it is known as 'sandighda ekadashi'. This ekadashi should be given up as it destroys dharma, artha.

If the ekAdashI extends from a duration of three ghaTikA-s (72 minutes) in the morning, then it is called a `saN^kIrNa'-ekAdashI ( " impure " ekAdashI), and is to be given up by those desiring righteousness

Condition 1. The shravana naxatara should not have contact withUttarAshAda naxatara on this day.Observation : UttarAshAda is present at Sunrise and ShravaNa starts at08:03 PDT on 09/11 for PDT.This does not satisfy for shravana upavAsa

Condition 2. The shravana naxatara should have contact with Dhanistanaxatara on this day.Observation : There is no DhanisTa on 09/11 for PDT.This does not satisfy or shravana upavAsa

Condition 3. The Shravana naxatra should be present at Sunrise time.Observation : UttarAshAda is present at Sunrise for PDTThis does not satisfy or shravana upavAsa

Condition 4. The sravana naxatra should be running through the afternoonon this day.Observation : This is true. ShravaNa runs through afternoon on 09/11 forPDT.

Conclusion: No Shravana upavasa on 09/11/08 for PDT .Looking at the shravanOpavAsa, only one out of four are true and sothereis no shravanOpavAsa on Thursday for PDT time zones as condition 1..3are not satisfied.

Shravana Naxatra and dwAdashi for Friday 09/12 .However, for CDT/EDT time zones, all the conditions mentioned above aresatisfied for 09/12/08, Friday.For EDT, Dwadashi ends : 06:15 AMFor CDT, Dwadashi ends : 05:15 AM

For PDT, Dwadashi is there till 03:15 AMShravaNa present at sunrise/aruNodaya for both CDT/EDT.
